A man in a window of the apartment building “Château de le Rocasse” looks out of his room directly into the bright morning sun. Has he just woken up after a romantic night? Or is he simply enjoying the magnificent view as a traveller, looking out over the church of Notre Dame des Anges in the centre of the historic old town, and the harbour of Collioure? I never found out. Our eyes met for a moment. Then he silently disappeared back into the room, leaving me with my imagination. Read more

You’re strolling leisurely along the promenade in the harbour of Collioure – and suddenly soldiers in combat gear and camouflage pass you by – what’s the background to this, which seems to disturb the relaxed holiday mood? Read more

Trausnitz Castle sits in a scenic spot above the old town of Landshut in Lower Bavaria. Although it’s only half an hour from my home, I’ve visited Landshut and the surrounding region less often than, say, Munich and the Alps. Yet there’s so much to see: the old town with its city gates and historic buildings, St Martin’s Church with the world’s tallest brick tower, and Trausnitz Castle overlooking it all. Read more

Welcome to Assisi and the picturesque Italian region of Umbria. Assisi is known for its fascinating history, spiritual significance and breathtaking landscapes. Autumn, with its vibrant colours and mild temperatures, is a particularly advantageous time to explore this city. On our “coast to coast” journey, we reached Assisi after impressive stays in Pisa and Talamone on the Tyrrhenian Sea, following a drive full of beautiful impressions past the springs of Saturnia and Orvieto. It’s not without reason that the “Square of Miracles” (Piazza dei Miracoli) in Pisa is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The monumental cemetery (Camposanto Monumentale), the round Baptistery (Battistero), the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and, of course, the “Leaning Tower” (Campanile) form a unique, cohesive architectural ensemble in the style of medieval Pisan Romanesque. The province of Scania in Southern Sweden boasts some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the country. Our journey therefore took us from Skanör and Falsterbo on the west coast in a wide arc along the southern coastline to the long Hanö Bay on the east coast. The route led through Trelleborg and Ystad, past beautiful beaches at Löderups Strandbad and Mälarshusens Strandbad. North of Stenshuvud National Park, 20 kilometres of sandy beach stretch as far as the eponymous island of Hanö, which is already in the province of Blekinge. The beach slopes gently into the sea and is perfect for swimming, while the dunes behind it are ideal for cycling or hiking. You’ll find holiday home settlements and campsites scattered through the coastal forests. In Rigeleje, we found a relaxed campsite in the pine forest right behind the beach. Smaller towns like Kivik, Åhus or Sölvesborg are perfect for a stroll. The combination of a relaxed beach stay, nature experiences and lively towns promised a stay full of contrasts and unforgettable impressions. Read more

One of the highlights of my stay in Dubrovnik was the walk along the massive city walls. Their origins date back to the Middle Ages and they were expanded to today’s impressive size until the 16th century. Read more
