The Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, as part of the entire architectural complex on the ‘Square of Miracles’, was an important destination for my photo project of Tuscan churches. The similar elements of the facade design – columns, cornices and dark bands, blind arcades and portals with galleries – can be found in the architecture of Central Italy across many periods, from pre-Renaissance, Romanesque or Gothic. I have already marvelled at such churches in Siena and Lucca. It was there that I also created the first examples of the series featuring multi-perspectives.
We were on a week-long tour to the Maremma region, visiting Talamone and Assisi in Umbria, and we planned a short stopover in Pisa. The Siena campsite is just a few minutes’ walk from the complex, allowing me to set off flexibly at different times and in various lighting conditions. Even in autumn, the city was buzzing with visitors, but the campsite offered a relaxed calm. We were confirmed that we had done everything right by the magical twilight experience on the Square of Miracles.
