Switzerland, 1992 – today
The peaks around the Bernina, which just reach the 4000m mark, are considered the jewel of the Engadin, whose beauty is widely praised as the ‘Grand Hall of the Alps’. St. Moritz, the Silvaplana lakes, or the Maloja Pass are just a few more attractions in the region. See the panorama from the Diavolezza hut at sunrise, Bernina in the first sunlight, impressions of the tour on the glacier or the summit of Piz Palü.
Ticino, like hardly any other region, combines the longing for Mediterranean flair with a high-alpine environment. The Gotthard Tunnel or the pass road are the gateway to the southern sun for most visitors. From the main Alpine ridge, the valleys – Valle Leventina, Valle Maggia, Val Verzasca etc. – stretch southwards towards the azure Lago Maggiore with fashionable towns like Locarno or Ascona, forming the transition from the Alps to the North Italian Po Plain.
Away from the well-known peaks, the ascent of the Hausstock on the border of Glarus and Grisons is a rewarding tour destination.
Lake Walen in the canton of St. Gallen is deeply cut and fjord-like between the craggy peaks of the Churfirsten and the summits of Glarus, just an hour from Zurich.
