On the road
With his novel ‘On the Road’, about journeys across the USA and to Mexico in the late 1940s, Jack Kerouac wrote an early masterpiece about motoring and road travel; there are countless novels or American road movies, from ‘Vanishing Point’, ‘Easy Rider’, ‘Theo gegen den Rest der Welt’ or ‘The Straight Story’. The road often serves as a reflection of society, representing a longing for far-off places or a new beginning.
I also spend a lot of time on the road, often alone, just as many of us spend a large part of our lives travelling in vehicles. I experience a wide range of moods, shaped by the time of day, the seasons, and the places and landscapes I pass through.
That’s why I’m attempting a photographic exploration of this type of travel and the challenge of capturing the fleeting nature of a unique moment, instead of hundreds of identical images of tourist attractions.
