Window Cleaners – Making Vienna Sparkle

During my stay in Vienna, I noticed that on this first sunny day after a rainy cold front, window cleaners suddenly appeared everywhere. I observed them in the morning on the modern high-rises around the main station, later on the historic facades of the Upper Belvedere, and finally on many shops and cafés in the city centre. These are people who bring more sparkle and clarity to the boundary between the indoor and outdoor worlds, restoring light to spaces.

While rush hour traffic crawled below, several floors above, a different kind of everyday hero hung almost like puppets in a theatre: industrial climbers cleaning the windows on the glass high-rise facades near the main station. Like urban mountaineers, they moved seemingly weightlessly several storeys above the street along the reflective building shell.

While tourists photograph the facades, others ensure these facades shine in the first place

Many modern glass facades do have special coatings against dirt and water stains, but the mixture of pollen, Saharan dust, and fine dust left dull streaks on the glass surfaces, which became immediately visible in the first sunlight. Sunny days after rainy periods are therefore ideal, as the residues become particularly noticeable then.Window cleaners on the exterior facade of the

A few hours later, a completely different scene unfolded at the Upper Belvedere Palace and Art Museum: there, window cleaners stood with ladders and telescopic poles against the baroque facades of the palace. Amidst stucco, sandstone, and historic windows, the work seemed almost timeless – as if little had changed here for centuries.

It was precisely this contrast that made the observation so interesting: modern glass architecture cleaned by industrial climbers on ropes, and just a few metres away, traditional ground-level work on one of Vienna’s most significant Baroque buildings. Two completely different working worlds – yet with the same goal: to make the city sparkle again in the sunlight.
