Trip to Autumnal Florence

4. November 2025/0 Comments/in Tuscany/by Matthias

The historic Ponte Vecchio Bridge over the River Arno at dusk, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

Autumnal Florence entices with pleasant temperatures for city tours and fewer tourists than in high season, even if “fewer” still meant a rather lively old town and large groups in front of and inside the sights. The reason for my trip to Tuscany was indeed the photo project with the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore, but beyond that, there was so much more to see in the city.

Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore)

For my series of sacred “Multiperspective” collages, I really wanted to photograph Florence Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence – it is historically and in terms of architectural history related to the shots from Lucca, Siena and Pisa. At the beginning of November 2025, I had time, and the weather was forecast to offer plenty of sunshine, with autumnal temperatures still between 10 degrees at night and up to 20 degrees during the day. Even if you can’t comfortably sit on the outdoor terraces of bars and restaurants in the evening, the temperatures are quite pleasant for extended tours of the city. My last stay 15 years ago was in 36-degree summer heat – unbearable during the day. Read more

The hot thermal springs of Saturnia

4. October 2023/0 Comments/in Tuscany/by Matthias

An Italian man sits in the cascading waters of the hot thermal springs of Saturnia, Tuscany, Italy

On our short trip in autumn, we crossed Italy through Tuscany and Umbria, from Talamone on the west coast past Lake Bolsena and Orvieto up to Assisi. Later, we crossed the Apennines near the source of the Tiber and reached the Adriatic coast. Along the way, we came to an inconspicuous valley in the picturesque Tuscan landscape, amidst rolling hills and fragrant forests, home to the thermal springs of Saturnia. Read more

Punta del Corvo in the Maremma Regional Park

The coast heading north from Talamone is already part of the Maremma Regional Park. This nature reserve in southern Tuscany covers the area south of Principina a Mare, the mouth of the Ombrone river, the Uccellina mountains and the hinterland as far as Albarese. That’s also where the visitor centre is located. Special access regulations apply for hiking, horse riding, kayaking or cycling tours. Many tours can only be done with prior registration and, in some cases, only with a guide. Read more

Low season in Talamone

The Rocca Aldobrandesca castle on the rocky coast of the Maremma in Talamone in the golden sunset, Tuscany, Italy

Talamone, a picturesque coastal village in Tuscany, has its own unique charm. Talamone offers spectacular views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The coastline is characterised by rocky cliffs, hidden coves and crystal-clear water, making the place a paradise for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts. Visitors appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and the warm hospitality of the locals. In contrast to the heavily visited – if not overcrowded – tourist destinations in northern Tuscany, as we experienced in Pisa the days before, Talamone is significantly quieter. This is particularly noticeable in the low season in September and October. The sea is still at a pleasant temperature and the sunny days are southern-warm. Read more

The Rocca Aldobrandesca Castle of Talamone

The Rocca Aldobrandesca castle on the rocky coast of the Maremma in Talamone in the twilight of dusk, Tuscany, Italy

Talamone, located on the southern coast of Tuscany, has a rich history dating back to Etruscan times. The village was once an important port. The historic buildings in the old town and the ruins of numerous castles and towers bear witness to its past. Particularly impressive is the imposing medieval Rocca Aldobrandesca fortress, which perches high above the village on the headland, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Read more

The Leaning Tower of Pisa

1. October 2023/0 Comments/in Tuscany/by Matthias

Collage of the Baptistery, Cathedral and Leaning Tower of Pisa, Tuscany, Italy

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, as part of the entire architectural complex on the ‘Square of Miracles’, was an important destination for my photo project of Tuscan churches. The similar elements of the facade design – columns, cornices and dark bands, blind arcades and portals with galleries – can be found in the architecture of Central Italy across many periods, from pre-Renaissance, Romanesque or Gothic. I have already marvelled at such churches in Siena and Lucca. It was there that I also created the first examples of the series featuring multi-perspectives. Read more
