At the Square of Miracles in Pisa

1. October 2023/0 Comments/in Tuscany/by Matthias

The Cathedral and the Leaning Tower of Pisa glowing in the golden light of dusk, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy

It’s not without reason that the “Square of Miracles” (Piazza dei Miracoli) in Pisa is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The monumental cemetery (Camposanto Monumentale), the round Baptistery (Battistero), the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and, of course, the “Leaning Tower” (Campanile) form a unique, cohesive architectural ensemble in the style of medieval Pisan Romanesque. Lucca – in the shadow of Pisa

27. June 2021/0 Comments/in Italy, Tuscany/by Matthias

Columns, cornices, string courses, and arches on the tower and west facade of the Romanesque San Martino Cathedral in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy

Passing through modern, busy and traffic-heavy districts, you reach the ring-shaped city walls of Lucca. Slipping through one of the portals, you enter a seemingly different world in the historic centre. The noise and bustle seem to stay on the other side of the city ramparts. Read more

Bagno delle Donne in Talamone

7. August 2020/0 Comments/in Italy, Tuscany/by Matthias

Sun loungers and parasol at the Bagno delle Donne bathing area on the rocky coast of Talamone, Maremma, Tuscany, Italy

As if the old town of Talamone wasn’t already worth seeing enough, the bathing spot Bagno delle Donne lies by crystal-clear water, picturesquely nestled between the steeply rising black-grey rocks of the Tyrrhenian Sea coast, overlooked by the towers of the medieval fortress and surrounded by the wide panorama featuring Monte Argentario and Giglio Island. Talamone – Small but Perfectly Formed Holiday Spot

7. August 2020/0 Comments/in Italy, Tuscany/by Matthias

Driftwood sculptures on the beach in front of the old town of Talamone on the Mediterranean, Maremma, Tuscany, Italy

On our trip to Tuscany, we had only two destinations firmly planned: a reunion with the Old Town of Siena and the coast near Castiglione della Pescaia in southern Tuscany. After that, we let our curiosity guide us. When we spotted Monte Argentario on the horizon to the south of Castiglione, our next direction was set. For this, we crossed the Maremma plain near Grosseto and passed through the Monti dell’ Uccelina Nature Park. On its southern edge lies Talamone, a small ensemble of a medieval old town, a fortress and a modern marina, which we had chosen as our next base. Read more

Castiglione della Pescaia – Gateway to Maremma

6. August 2020/0 Comments/in Italy, Tuscany/by Matthias

View over the Fortress, the town and the harbour of Castiglione della Pescaia, looking out onto a wide, sweeping bay on the Maremma coast at dusk, Tuscany, Italy

Castiglione della Pescaia is a place just how I like it – the attractive atmosphere of an authentic, lively Italian small town with shops and restaurants, a variety of options for sports activities or relaxed recreation, nestled in a historic old town worth seeing and a stunning coastal landscape. Summer Thunderstorm Over Tuscany

5. August 2020/0 Comments/in Italy, Tuscany/by Matthias

Thunderstorm cell with rain shower moves over Elba and the sea towards the Tuscan coast near Punta Ala, Tuscany, Italy

In the height of summer, temperatures in the Tuscan hinterland often climb to or above 40 degrees. At such times, tourists and locals alike prefer the Tyrrhenian Sea coast, where a fresh breeze provides cooling and the sea offers a refreshing dip. But even there, in the humid summer heat, clouds can gather, releasing their pent-up energy in flickering, rumbling heat lightning or powerful thunderstorms with squalls and heavy downpours. The Two Towers of Castiglione della Pescaia

5. August 2020/0 Comments/in Italy, Tuscany/by Matthias

The two towers at the harbour entrance of Castiglione della Pescaia, Maremma, Tuscany, Italy

At the mouth of the river Bruna into the Tyrrhenian Sea stand two towers – a blue and a red lighthouse. The towers show seafarers a safe way into the harbour of Castiglione della Pescaia, a fishing and bathing resort on the southern Tuscan coast. Read more
