Welcome to Assisi
Welcome to Assisi and the picturesque Italian region of Umbria. Assisi is known for its fascinating history, spiritual significance and breathtaking landscapes. Autumn, with its vibrant colours and mild temperatures, is a particularly advantageous time to explore this city. On our “coast to coast” journey, we reached Assisi after impressive stays in Pisa and Talamone on the Tyrrhenian Sea, following a drive full of beautiful impressions past the springs of Saturnia and Orvieto.
As nature in the surrounding hills and valleys transforms from lush green to vibrant reds, bright oranges and earthy yellows, Assisi provides a picturesque backdrop. Strolls through the alleys of the old town, along the ancient city walls, up to the fortress or to the numerous churches and monasteries constantly offer breathtaking views of the Mediterranean autumnal landscape.
Autumn in Assisi is characterised by pleasant temperatures, ideal for extensive exploration on foot. The summer heat fades, while days remain sunny and evenings are pleasantly cool. It’s perfect for visiting the city’s many sights, including the Basilica of Saint Francis, the Basilica of St Clare or the Rocca Maggiore fortress.
Umbria is famous for its excellent wines, and autumn is the time of the grape harvest. Visitors have the opportunity to take part in wine tastings in the surrounding vineyards and enjoy the flavours of local wines such as Sagrantino and Grechetto. It is a chance to experience the region’s rich wine tradition and learn more about the production process.
The autumn season also brings an abundance of fresh, regional ingredients that enrich the menus of restaurants in Assisi. From mushroom dishes to truffle specialities, there is a variety of delicious treats to indulge the taste buds. Don’t forget to try local olive oils, cheeses, sweets and other delicacies that reflect Umbria’s culinary diversity. There were great value offers at the local market, and the meat of wild boar roasted on a spit is also very popular.
A highlight of the year is the Feast of Saint Francis on 4 October, when the city celebrates the life and legacy of its most famous inhabitant. Without knowing it, we arrived in Assisi on that very day.
