Lake Federa between autumn and winter

5. November 2025/0 Comments/in Dolomites/by Matthias

I was actually two weeks too late for a visit to Lake Federa near Cortina d'Ampezzo: the peak of the yellow-golden larch colours had already passed in the higher altitudes.

On the way back from my trip to Florence, I added a stay in the autumnal Dolomites. I was actually two weeks too late for the visit to Lake Federa near Cortina d’Ampezzo: the peak of the yellow-golden larch colours had already passed in these mountain regions. The trees were already shedding their needles and the nights were getting very frosty for sleeping in the roof tent. Despite a good down sleeping bag and insulation, it’s still uncomfortable and always takes a lot of effort. Since it had snowed in the previous days, the snow-capped higher mountain regions already signalled the transition to winter.

Trip to Autumnal Florence

4. November 2025/0 Comments/in Tuscany/by Matthias

The historic Ponte Vecchio Bridge over the River Arno at dusk, Florence, Tuscany, Italy

Autumnal Florence entices with pleasant temperatures for city tours and fewer tourists than in high season, even if “fewer” still meant a rather lively old town and large groups in front of and inside the sights. The reason for my trip to Tuscany was indeed the photo project with the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore, but beyond that, there was so much more to see in the city.

Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore)

Collage of the bell tower, baptistery, main portal, and dome of Florence Cathedral (Santa Maria del Fiore) in warm sunlight, Tuscany, Italy

For my series of sacred “Multiperspective” collages, I really wanted to photograph Florence Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence – it is historically and in terms of architectural history related to the shots from Lucca, Siena and Pisa. At the beginning of November 2025, I had time, and the weather was forecast to offer plenty of sunshine, with autumnal temperatures still between 10 degrees at night and up to 20 degrees during the day. Even if you can’t comfortably sit on the outdoor terraces of bars and restaurants in the evening, the temperatures are quite pleasant for extended tours of the city. My last stay 15 years ago was in 36-degree summer heat – unbearable during the day. Read more

When early-born rosy-fingered Eos appeared

4. October 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

Dawn over Parikia Bay, Paros Island, Cyclades, Greece

“When early-born rosy-fingered Eos appeared” or, depending on the translation, “When then the rosy-fingered Eos, the morning, appeared” – the verse comes from Homer’s Odyssey and refers to the goddess of the dawn in Greek mythology, Eos. The verse is used several times as a formulaic expression to describe the sunrise. “Rosy-fingered” refers to the coloured rays that paint the morning sky. Eos is the sister of the sun god Helios and the moon goddess Selene. Read more

Krios – A day by the sea

Sun loungers on Krios Beach, Paros, Greece

After the many excursions and activities of the last few days – Antiparos and Aliki, a boat trip in the Gulf of Naoussa, hiking in Paros Park, the inland villages and the wine tasting – today was a rest day by the sea. Read more

Wine Tasting at Ktima Roussos Winery

2. October 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

Tour of the Ktima Roussos Winery on Paros, Greece

On Paros, wine doesn’t just flow into glasses; it runs through the island’s very history. Over 3,000 years ago, people here planted the first vines – archaeological finds from the Mycenaean era prove that wine shaped culture, trade, and social life then just as it does today. Ancient amphorae tell tales of exports to neighbouring islands, while local festivals celebrated the grape juice. Even today, winemakers rely on old grape varieties like Monemvasia and Mandilaria, combining traditional methods with modern techniques to bring the island’s heritage to life in every bottle. In the Heart of Paros – Lefkes, Marpissa and Prodromos

2. October 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

A woman in a hat photographs the Evangelismos Church in the old town of Marpissa, Paros, Greece

Anyone who only knows Paros from its beaches and coastline misses the island’s more authentic side. Beyond the beach tourism, in the quieter island interior, lie three villages that still feel as if time has passed more slowly: Lefkes, Marpissa and Prodromos. Here, Paros shows its unvarnished side – complete with crumbling walls and rubbish, decay and renewal. It is precisely the tension between old and new, becoming and passing, past and future that gives these places their special charm. Read more
