The city of Landshut in Lower Bavaria is known for its magnificent old town, Trausnitz Castle towering over the city, and the Landshut Wedding. This major historical pageant, held every four years, reenacts the 1475 marriage of Duke George the Rich and Hedwig Jagiellon of Poland. The Gothic St Martin’s Church features the world’s tallest brick tower at 130 metres and is the city’s landmark, visible from afar. Landshut’s old town is considered one of the best-preserved Gothic streetscapes in Europe. The colourful gabled houses and the imposing town hall are particularly striking.

The mighty 13th-century Trausnitz Castle was once the residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty. It offers spectacular views over the city, especially from the castle tavern’s terrace at sunset, and houses a Chamber of Art and Curiosities. Entry to the courtyard and viewing terraces is free, while the tour through the palace, princely building, and other rooms is well worth the admission price.
