Dubrovnik at Sunset

13. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Sea kayakers paddling at sunset in the sea in front of Dubrovnik Old Town, Croatia

After a long journey and a stopover in Senj, we finally reached Dubrovnik. In previous years, we hadn’t made it quite so far, only reaching Korcula or Orebic on the Peljesac peninsula. To experience an unforgettable sunset in Dubrovnik, we had many options: with a panoramic view of the city and the sea from Mount Srd, at numerous viewpoints along the coastline such as St. Jacob’s, from one of the towers and battlements of the city walls high above the Old Town, or from a boat in the sea off the coast. Old Town Stroll in Ebeltoft

12. August 2022/0 Comments/in Denmark/by Matthias

Colourful facades and hollyhocks in the alleys of Ebeltoft old town, Djursland, Denmark in the sun under a blue sky

After the quiet hours at the Sletterhage Lighthouse on the Helgenæs peninsula, we plunged into the lively small town of Ebeltoft. It’s situated on the Hasnæs peninsula in the southeast of Djursland and serves as the tourist hub for this picturesque region of Denmark. Read more

Exploring the Thy Region in Northern Denmark

9. August 2022/0 Comments/in Denmark/by Matthias

Cairns standing on the sandy beach of Klitmøller on the west coast of Jutland, Denmark

On our way south from the northern tip of Denmark, we drove from Lønstrup along the North Jutland coast into the Thy region, which is separated from the mainland by the Limfjord. What I hadn’t realised until then was that I was on an island!

The Limfjord cuts right through Northern Denmark, connecting the North Sea near Agger with the Baltic Sea near Aalborg, thus separating the entire northern part of Jutland from the rest of Denmark. Until 1825, there was still a permanent land connection near Agger, before a storm surge washed this land away, formally creating the “North Jutland Island“. Read more

Max-Joseph-Platz in Munich

27. September 2021/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Collage of the buildings at Max-Joseph-Platz in Munich

During a walk through Munich, where I had already explored the Mariensäule on Marienplatz through my art, I also passed by Max-Joseph-Platz. There, my focus wasn’t so much on the centre of the square with its equestrian statue, where the surrounding façades only form the backdrop. Instead, I wanted to condense and capture the impression of the interplay between these buildings bordering the open space, with the different architectural styles, shapes and colours of their façades. The Mariensäule on Marienplatz in Munich

27. September 2021/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The Mariensäule in front of historic and modern buildings on Munich's Marienplatz

As part of my photographic series Multiperspectives, and specifically the Munich sights within it, I took a liking to the Mariensäule on Marienplatz. For centuries, Marienplatz has been the vibrant administrative, political, and economic heart of the Bavarian capital Munich. It houses the city administration and is a crucial transport hub: where important trade routes once converged, today major S-Bahn and U-Bahn lines, as well as the main axes of the pedestrian zone, intersect. Landshut – an impressive old town

6. September 2021/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The Gothic St Martin's Church with the tallest brick tower in the world in Landshut, Bavaria, Germany

The city of Landshut in Lower Bavaria is known for its magnificent old town, Trausnitz Castle towering over the city, and the Landshut Wedding. This major historical pageant, held every four years, reenacts the 1475 marriage of Duke George the Rich and Hedwig Jagiellon of Poland. The Gothic St Martin’s Church features the world’s tallest brick tower at 130 metres and is the city’s landmark, visible from afar. Landshut’s old town is considered one of the best-preserved Gothic streetscapes in Europe. The colourful gabled houses and the imposing town hall are particularly striking. Read more

Historic Tanneries on the River Temo in Bosa

3. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Picturesque Bosa - historic tanneries on the River Temo in the old town, Planargia, Sardinia

On the southern bank of the River Temo, the long row of former tannery buildings, Sas Conzas, dominates. In the 19th century, tanning and leather processing was a defining economic sector for Bosa, favoured by its riverside location. Many of the buildings are now being renovated and used as holiday flats or restaurants. Read more
