Arrival in Lønstrup in North Jutland
The pictures and descriptions I’d seen of amazing landscapes and interesting people from Denmark’s northern tip built up anticipation for many new impressions and experiences on our trip to North Jutland. We decided on Lønstrup as our base for exploring the Danish northern tip. Besides local attractions such as the migrating dune Rubjerg Knude with the lighthouse Rubjerg Knude Fyr, Skagen and the Grenen headland, the dune landscape Råbjerg Mile or Aarhus are all easily accessible by car.
Due to long traffic jams on the long journey from Southern Germany, we stayed overnight in Hamburg instead of crossing the border into southern Denmark. This allowed us to spontaneously explore the city centre and coincidentally experience Christopher Street Day. The following travel day began with a leisurely coffee to an impressive sunrise over the Elbe, HafenCity and the Elbphilharmonie. After that, we drove many hours and countless motorway kilometres north, reaching North Jutland in the early afternoon.
In the centre of Lønstrup, we headed for a small, cosy campsite with a very friendly owner couple. Here, I was once again positively impressed by how well campsites in Scandinavia cater not only to motorhome users but also to anglers, tent campers, cycle tourists and hikers. In addition to sanitary facilities and washrooms, there are usually communal kitchens with fridges and cooking facilities, as well as common rooms for eating or relaxing. This means that even periods of bad weather can be spent dry and comfortably outside your own (often small) tent.
We started our first exploration tour along the main streets Strandvejen and Rubjergvej, which stretch with many craft shops and galleries down to the beach and the small harbour below the dunes. There, fishing boats are pulled onto the sand – typical for Denmark’s northwest coast, where sheltered harbours are not always available. The approaching rain then drove us into the cosy café above the beach access for a break. After it soon cleared up again, we continued our walk through the holiday home settlements along the cliff. There, we also had a wide view of the North Sea, the coastal arc of Jammerbugt, and for the first time, the migrating dune Rubjerg Knude with its lighthouse.
