When early-born rosy-fingered Eos appeared

4. October 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

Dawn over Parikia Bay, Paros Island, Cyclades, Greece

“When early-born rosy-fingered Eos appeared” or, depending on the translation, “When then the rosy-fingered Eos, the morning, appeared” – the verse comes from Homer’s Odyssey and refers to the goddess of the dawn in Greek mythology, Eos. The verse is used several times as a formulaic expression to describe the sunrise. “Rosy-fingered” refers to the coloured rays that paint the morning sky. Eos is the sister of the sun god Helios and the moon goddess Selene. Read more

Wine Tasting at Ktima Roussos Winery

2. October 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

Tour of the Ktima Roussos Winery on Paros, Greece

On Paros, wine doesn’t just flow into glasses; it runs through the island’s very history. Over 3,000 years ago, people here planted the first vines – archaeological finds from the Mycenaean era prove that wine shaped culture, trade, and social life then just as it does today. Ancient amphorae tell tales of exports to neighbouring islands, while local festivals celebrated the grape juice. Even today, winemakers rely on old grape varieties like Monemvasia and Mandilaria, combining traditional methods with modern techniques to bring the island’s heritage to life in every bottle. Where fishermen tell stories

People silhouetted against the sunset at a chapel above Parikia Bay, Paros, Greece

On the way back from the hike in Paros Park, we stopped at a viewpoint above Parikia Bay just in time for the sunset. After the sun had disappeared behind the horizon, we drove to Parikia harbour in the dusk – where the sea never sleeps and the fishermen tell stories. Read more

Hiking through Paros Park

On the hike through wild rocky coast to the lighthouse in Paros Park
Paros Park, a pioneer of its kind in the Cyclades, is a nature and culture park covering an 800-hectare peninsula near Naoussa with great geological and historical importance. The organisation behind it relies on donations and volunteering. The nature park welcomes visitors all year round for a variety of ecological and cultural activities, or simply for a hike on well-marked trails across the peninsula to the island’s northernmost point. Sundowners in Naoussa

1. October 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

Fishing boats in the Old Port of Naoussa in front of the white houses of the old town, Paros, Greece

After a relaxed day on the sea, we returned to the port of Naoussa in the early evening. In the light of the warm evening sun, we went on a journey of discovery into the old town. Fishing boats bobbed picturesquely in the old fishing harbour. On the pier, tables were being set for guests to have dinner. We eventually watched all this over a drink on the terrace of the Sommaripa Bar. Read more
