Hanö Bay in Southern Sweden – more than just sandy beaches

18. July 2023/0 Comments/in Sweden/by Matthias

Sandy beach on the Baltic coast in Hanö Bay near Rigeleje in summer, Scania, Sweden

The province of Scania in Southern Sweden boasts some of the most beautiful sandy beaches in the country. Our journey therefore took us from Skanör and Falsterbo on the west coast in a wide arc along the southern coastline to the long Hanö Bay on the east coast. The route led through Trelleborg and Ystad, past beautiful beaches at Löderups Strandbad and Mälarshusens Strandbad. North of Stenshuvud National Park, 20 kilometres of sandy beach stretch as far as the eponymous island of Hanö, which is already in the province of Blekinge. The beach slopes gently into the sea and is perfect for swimming, while the dunes behind it are ideal for cycling or hiking. You’ll find holiday home settlements and campsites scattered through the coastal forests. In Rigeleje, we found a relaxed campsite in the pine forest right behind the beach. Smaller towns like Kivik, Åhus or Sölvesborg are perfect for a stroll. The combination of a relaxed beach stay, nature experiences and lively towns promised a stay full of contrasts and unforgettable impressions. Read more

Djursland – relaxation and slowing down

13. August 2022/0 Comments/in Denmark/by Matthias

A woman sitting on a camping chair on the shores of the Kattegat in the sun, drinking wine, Djursland, Jutland, Denmark

In Djursland, in the west of Northern Denmark, we got to know great beaches and landscapes, cultural sights, interesting people and pretty towns. In conclusion, however, it must be said that this inviting region contributed to our relaxation and slowing down. The quieter stretches of coastline in particular offered a haven of peace and a retreat from cities or traffic. Read more

Exploring the Thy Region in Northern Denmark

9. August 2022/0 Comments/in Denmark/by Matthias

Cairns standing on the sandy beach of Klitmøller on the west coast of Jutland, Denmark

On our way south from the northern tip of Denmark, we drove from Lønstrup along the North Jutland coast into the Thy region, which is separated from the mainland by the Limfjord. What I hadn’t realised until then was that I was on an island!

The Limfjord cuts right through Northern Denmark, connecting the North Sea near Agger with the Baltic Sea near Aalborg, thus separating the entire northern part of Jutland from the rest of Denmark. Until 1825, there was still a permanent land connection near Agger, before a storm surge washed this land away, formally creating the “North Jutland Island“. Read more

Arrival in Lønstrup in North Jutland

7. August 2022/0 Comments/in Denmark/by Matthias

North Sea and cliffs near Lønstrup in front of the Rubjerg Knude shifting sand dune, Jutland, Denmark

The pictures and descriptions I’d seen of amazing landscapes and interesting people from Denmark’s northern tip built up anticipation for many new impressions and experiences on our trip to North Jutland. We decided on Lønstrup as our base for exploring the Danish northern tip. Besides local attractions such as the migrating dune Rubjerg Knude with the lighthouse Rubjerg Knude Fyr, Skagen and the Grenen headland, the dune landscape Råbjerg Mile or Aarhus are all easily accessible by car. Sunrise at the Porphyry Rocks of Coccorocci Beach

7. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Sunrise with a dramatic sky at Coccorocci bay with the red porphyry rocks and Monte Cartucceddu on the east coast of Sardinia, Ogliastra, Italy

What a dramatic sky at sunrise in Coccorocci Bay. The porphyry rocks glow a mystical pink in the twilight of dawn. Only the gurgling and crashing of the surf against the rocks can be heard; otherwise, there is peaceful silence. On a first day visit many years ago, I was very impressed by the rugged rocks, the grey pebble beach, the gnarled juniper trees and the wooded slopes below Monte Cartucceddu.

Rusty wagons of the Piscinas narrow-gauge railway

4. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Rusty wagons and scrap metal from a railway for transporting lead and zinc from the mines in Ingurtosu in the dunes on the beach of Piscinas on the Costa Verde, Sardinia, Italy

The southwest of Sardinia was shaped by mining for centuries. In Piscinas, in the middle of the dune landscape of the Costa Verde, there used to be a loading station for shipping ores. In the mountains near Ingurtosu, mineral resources such as lead or zinc were extracted from the mines at the Miniera di Naracauli, washed and transported to the sea by a narrow-gauge railway. Costa Verde – Wild Dunes, Long Sandy Beach

4. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Juniper tree with crooked, bent branches in the sand of the dunes at Piscinas beach, Costa Verde in the warm evening sun, Sardinia, Italy

The Costa Verde is one of my highlights in Sardinia. First, there’s the magnificent natural landscape with its vast sand dunes. Then, the seemingly endless sandy beach. In the hinterland, hikes on rocky ridges and visits to the slowly decaying buildings and facilities of former mining operations beckon. The southwest presents a completely different face compared to the rocky cliffs at Torre Argentina near Bosa or the cliffs on the west coast near Alghero. These varied landscapes make Sardinia such an attractive travel destination. Read more
