The Monte Albo Panoramic Road

10. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Cows stand in the midday sun on the road along the wild, karstic mountain range of Monte Albo, Baronia, Sardinia, Italy

The grey-white, karstic limestone mountains of Monte Albo rise over 1,000 m in eastern Sardinia. The main road between Posada and Nuoro runs along its southern slopes. To the north, a winding tarmac road snakes its way at mid-altitude through mountain forests, barren high pastures, deep valleys and scenic peaks. Read more

Sunrise at the Porphyry Rocks of Coccorocci Beach

7. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Sunrise with a dramatic sky at Coccorocci bay with the red porphyry rocks and Monte Cartucceddu on the east coast of Sardinia, Ogliastra, Italy

What a dramatic sky at sunrise in Coccorocci Bay. The porphyry rocks glow a mystical pink in the twilight of dawn. Only the gurgling and crashing of the surf against the rocks can be heard; otherwise, there is peaceful silence. On a first day visit many years ago, I was very impressed by the rugged rocks, the grey pebble beach, the gnarled juniper trees and the wooded slopes below Monte Cartucceddu.

An espresso in Iglesias

6. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Colourful parasols protect pedestrians from the hot midday sun on Piazza Lamarmora, surrounded by historic houses in the old town of Iglesias in south-western Sardinia, Iglesiente, Italy

The journey along the west coast of Sardinia, which began in Torre del Porticciolo, ends with a visit to the mining town of Iglesias. After an early start from Cala Domestica, the glistening sun increasingly heats up the barren land. Fortunately, colourful parasols hung over the alleys in the old town’s pedestrian zone protect passers-by from the burning midday sun. They also cast an interesting graphic shadow pattern on the granite-paved ground. Read more

Hiking at Cala Domestica

5. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Twilight in the fjord-like bay of Cala Domestica in south-western Sardinia, Iglesiente, Italy

Cala Domestica is a fantastic bay with turquoise water, set in a barren, mountainous, and earthy-coloured landscape in south-western Sardinia. Once rich in mineral resources, this region is now home to the remains of numerous mines and mining facilities: Masua, Buggerru, Piscinas/Ingurtosu, Montevecchio, and many more. The coast here is rocky and rugged, with inviting bays and beautiful sandy beaches nestled in between, perfect for swimming. Read more

Rusty wagons of the Piscinas narrow-gauge railway

4. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Rusty wagons and scrap metal from a railway for transporting lead and zinc from the mines in Ingurtosu in the dunes on the beach of Piscinas on the Costa Verde, Sardinia, Italy

The southwest of Sardinia was shaped by mining for centuries. In Piscinas, in the middle of the dune landscape of the Costa Verde, there used to be a loading station for shipping ores. In the mountains near Ingurtosu, mineral resources such as lead or zinc were extracted from the mines at the Miniera di Naracauli, washed and transported to the sea by a narrow-gauge railway. Costa Verde – Wild Dunes, Long Sandy Beach

4. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Juniper tree with crooked, bent branches in the sand of the dunes at Piscinas beach, Costa Verde in the warm evening sun, Sardinia, Italy

The Costa Verde is one of my highlights in Sardinia. First, there’s the magnificent natural landscape with its vast sand dunes. Then, the seemingly endless sandy beach. In the hinterland, hikes on rocky ridges and visits to the slowly decaying buildings and facilities of former mining operations beckon. The southwest presents a completely different face compared to the rocky cliffs at Torre Argentina near Bosa or the cliffs on the west coast near Alghero. These varied landscapes make Sardinia such an attractive travel destination. Read more

Historic Tanneries on the River Temo in Bosa

3. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Picturesque Bosa - historic tanneries on the River Temo in the old town, Planargia, Sardinia

On the southern bank of the River Temo, the long row of former tannery buildings, Sas Conzas, dominates. In the 19th century, tanning and leather processing was a defining economic sector for Bosa, favoured by its riverside location. Many of the buildings are now being renovated and used as holiday flats or restaurants. Read more
