Torre del Porticciolo in Sardinia
The stunning bay with the old coastal watchtower Torre del Porticciolo is located on the west coast of North Sardinia in the Nurra region. This dreamlike stretch of coastline is a destination in its own right. Furthermore, it is an ideal base for experiencing the nature park at nearby Capo Caccia, taking trips to the Stintino peninsula and exploring the town of Alghero.
After the ferry crossing from Livorno, the campsite at Torre del Porticciolo marks the start of our journey along the west coast of Sardinia. This is our fourth time on the island. Previous holidays were with the children, where the focus was very much on beach holidays. During those trips, we got to know Gallura in the north and the Baronia and Ogliastra regions in the east. Now follows our first trip with a roof tent. This time we want to take more time for other activities like hiking or sightseeing. Additionally, we can choose our pitches more freely and flexibly. On this stretch of coast, there is both the comfort of beautiful, well-equipped campsites and many free, scenic and more secluded pitches. These are often only accessible at the end of washed-out, sandy field and forest tracks.
Dreamy hikes along wild coasts
To the south, towards Capo Caccia, lies the Porto Conte nature park around Monte Timidone and numerous bays along the cliffs, whose hiking trails may only be entered after registering at the visitor centre. However, even outside the nature park, you can walk long distances along the coast on secluded paths above the limestone cliffs and along beautiful bays. In the north, the mountains around the former mining town of Argentiera border the wide coastal panorama.
As always at the start of a trip to the hot south, we have to consciously hold back, i.e. spend the hot midday hours in the shade, by the pool or the sea, and move activities to the early morning and late afternoon/evening. This suits my daily rhythm as a photographer better, as these times always promise beautiful lighting moods. While west coasts are known for sunsets over the sea, the sunrises here also provide a great atmosphere.
