Picturesque Bosa – a town on the river

2. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Picturesque Bosa - stone bridge over the River Temo in front of the colourful houses of the old town and Malaspina Castle, Planargia, Sardinia

The town of Bosa lies between the hot and more inaccessible plateaus of Planargia, bleached by the summer sun, and the rocky coast in the west of Sardinia. The River Temo cuts through the table mountains down into the Mediterranean and is even deep enough for fishing boats and barges a few kilometres up from the coast. This is unique for a river in Sardinia. The present-day town of Bosa developed on the basis of this favourable location. Read more

Pitches right by the sea – Sardinia camping like in the catalogue

2. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Car with roof tent at a bay on the west coast of Sardinia in the glowing twilight after sunset, Italy, Europe

Dreamy pitches in Sardinia right by the sea or with magnificent views – that’s surely what most of the now numerous campers wish for. This is also what is suggested in the many sales catalogues for the vehicles. The reality, however, is often cramped, noisy and well-filled campsites. In Sardinia, however, there are still many opportunities in some places and at certain times to stay overnight a bit more secluded, legally, or at least tolerated by the local residents. Read more

Hike at Torre Argentina

Rocky island S'Isula de sas Crabas in the waters of a bay at Torre Argentario on the west coast of Sardinia in the warm morning sun, Italy, Europe

The scenic diversity and beauty of Sardinia’s west coast are best experienced on foot, hiking along the coast or in the mountains of the hinterland. The coastal section at Torre Argentina, north of Bosa, is ideal for this: impressive nature, a rugged rocky landscape, refreshing swimming opportunities in the crystal-clear sea, and an inviting place to stop for delicious food with a unique coastal panorama. Rugged rocky coast in the west of Sardinia

30. June 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Mediterranean natural beauty – Rugged, colourful rock formations in the surf of the deep blue Mediterranean on the west coast of Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia boasts varied, often wild, rugged and colourful rocky coasts. Shaped by erosion, you’ll find the most daring and imaginative shapes with a wide range of surface textures – from smooth and rounded, rough and porous to razor-sharp and pointed. The rocks also glow in every colour of the spectrum. Together with the deep blue and turquoise of the sea and sky, the reds and yellows of algae and lichens and the green of the vegetation, the result is an often surreal, psychedelic play of colours – completely natural, without any mind-altering drugs. Alghero – A Melting Pot of Many Cultures and Rulers

29. June 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Colourful houses of the old town of Alghero above the city walls by the sea glow in the warm evening sun, Sardinia, Italy

Alghero, on the west coast of Sardinia, has been shaped by numerous, changing rulers. This began with early roots in the Neolithic period and the well-known Nuragic culture. Around 800 BC, its history continued with Phoenician, Carthaginian, and later Roman influences. The Genoese followed in the 11th century, before the Catalans (with the House of Aragon) significantly influenced the cityscape and regional culture that can still be seen today. Read more

The stunning bay with the old coastal watchtower Torre del Porticciolo is located on the west coast of North Sardinia in the Nurra region. This dreamlike stretch of coastline is a destination in its own right. Furthermore, it is an ideal base for experiencing the nature park at nearby Capo Caccia, taking trips to the Stintino peninsula and exploring the town of Alghero. Read more

On the Ferry to Sardinia

27. June 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

View from the upper deck of people at the railing at the stern of a car ferry looking out at the sea and the Tuscan coast near Livorno, Italy

On the ferry from Livorno to Olbia, the anticipation for the journey along the west coast of Sardinia begins to build. We had previously rounded off the day of arrival with a bottle of wine and a beautiful sunset, and spent a quiet night on the coast south of the city centre, so that we would be well-rested at the harbour for the early morning departure.
