Evening Mood at the Elbphilharmonie

The Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg harbour glows during the blue hour at twilight, Hamburg, Germany

At sunset, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg’s Hafencity enchants with its illumination in the magical twilight of dusk, with the two phases of the Golden Hour or later the Blue Hour.

After an unexpectedly fun and eventful afternoon in Hamburg, we sat on the banks of the Elbe, looking across at the panorama of the Fish Market, Landungsbrücken, Überseebrücke, Speicherstadt, and Hafencity. Behind us were the warehouses and yards, loading cranes and quays of Hamburg harbour. The hustle and bustle of the Christopher Street Day Parade was behind us, and the relaxed part of the day began. Despite everything, there was still a lot of coming and going here for a long time.

Throughout the day, ferries bring spectators to the two musical theatres. During the day, it’s primarily families with girls sometimes dressed up from the current show “Frozen”, and towards evening, more formally dressed spectators for the musical “The Lion King”. Overnight stays in the musical theatre car park are tolerated; after all, we pay a hefty price (the 8 EUR flat rate for the duration of a performance quickly adds up to twenty euros with an overnight stay). There are no toilets unless you have tickets for the shows. In the forecourt, there are kiosks for food and drinks. However, prices of 10 EUR for 0.2 l Aperol Spritz made us reach for our own drinks from our cool box. But in return, the location offers an incomparable atmosphere with its views and harbour flair, both at dusk and for the early sunrise.
