SAP Garden – A New Architectural Highlight

3. March 2026/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Autumnal yellow ginkgo leaves on the ground and on trees in front of the modern facade of the SAP Garden multipurpose hall in the Olympic Park, Munich, Germany

Opened in 2024 near the Parkharfe area of Munich’s Olympic Park, the multipurpose SAP Garden arena replaces the former Olympic Velodrome and blends harmoniously into the park’s rolling landscape. The natural, ever-changing colors and shapes of the surrounding plants and trees create a striking contrast with the modern façade of dark glass and curved aluminum louvers. Read more

A Past Shrouded in Darkness

14. January 2026/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

A woman in a white summer dress photographing on the steps of the Feldherrnhalle in front of the Army Memorial sculpture, Munich, Bavaria, Germany

A young woman in a white dress, taking a photograph on the steps in front of Munich’s Feldherrnhalle – a selfie, perhaps, or a picture of the Theatine Church? She symbolizes innocence, peace, openness, and progress against the dark backdrop of nationalism, war, and death, embodied by the figure of a warrior at the Bavarian Army Memorial. Read more

Hofbräuhaus Munich – a very special tavern

25. October 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

This autumn, I took part in an expedition deep into the Bavarian heartlands, its culture, and its identity: to the Hofbräuhaus Munich. Well-equipped – with curiosity, humour, and a thirst – I took part in a guided tour of the Hofbräuhaus. I was, so to speak, a tourist in my own city. Since the tour goes through all the rooms, I was able to get a comprehensive picture of the place and the stories of what is probably Bavaria’s most internationally famous tavern. Read more

A tour of the New Palace Oberschleißheim

31. August 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Collage of the Baroque interiors in Unterschleißheim Palace, Munich, Bavaria, Germany

It wasn’t until friends visited that I finally took a tour of the Baroque New Palace Oberschleißheim. I was already familiar with the palace gardens from several visits, but I hadn’t really focused on the interiors until now. Read more

The Weeping Eye of the Futuro

25. September 2024/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Art installation Futuro House by Matti Suuronen, Munich, Bavaria, Germany
On a meadow in front of the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich, the egg-shaped Futuro House by Finnish architect Matti Suuronen has stood like a landed UFO since 2017. This vision for modern architecture from 1968 didn’t catch on in the market, though today it would experience a renaissance as a Tiny House. At a time of political upheaval, before the oil crisis and the announcement of the “Limits to Growth“, the technical and architectural design concept was nevertheless visionary.

Architecture of the Museum Brandhorst in Munich

25. September 2024/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Glass, metal and polychrome ceramic rods on the exterior facade of the Museum Brandhorst in Munich, Bavaria, Germany

With its colourful facade, the Museum Brandhorst is a striking cornerstone in the northeast of Munich’s Kunstareal. It’s intended to build a bridge between the artistic ideas in the museums and the everyday lives of people in the neighbouring districts. The entire building is not only architecturally outstanding, but also in terms of its building services. It’s built to be as sustainable as possible – from the lighting design, which uses as much natural daylight as possible instead of artificial light, to the heating and ventilation, which is a particular challenge given the constant climate requirements of artworks. Slacklining over the Isar

4. November 2023/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

A man watches another man on a slackline over the Isar at Luitpold Bridge

Munich lifestyle: balancing on a slackline over the Isar. Two highlines are strung up next to Luitpold Bridge against the colourful autumnal backdrop of the Peace Monument in the Maximiliansanlagen. The length is over 60 metres. Two young men walk along them high above the water, including the occasional stumble. A safety rope and climbing harness then prevent a fall. Read more
