Summer night at the Angel of Peace

27. August 2023/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Fountain with water jets in front of Luitpold Bridge and Prinzregentenstrasse backlit by the sunset in Munich

The Angel of Peace in the Maximiliansanlagen is one of the most beautiful viewpoints for the sunset in Munich city centre. A rectangular temple, topped by the column with the golden Angel of Peace, offers plenty of seating with a fantastic view: from above the staircases on both sides, you look along a visual axis over the fountain, the Luitpold Bridge and the Isar along western Prinzregentenstraße to the Prinz-Carl-Palais on the Altstadtring. Bavaria Statue and Hall of Fame Munich

3. July 2022/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The colossal statue of Bavaria in front of the Hall of Fame at the Theresienwiese in Munich, Bavaria, Germany

During my trips to Munich, I visited another of the city’s sights: the Bavaria statue in front of the Hall of Fame (Ruhmeshalle) at the Theresienwiese. With its construction in the mid-19th century, King Ludwig I wanted to convey a confident self-portrayal of the Bavarian “tribes” and create a monument to famous figures from Bavaria. Following an architectural competition in 1833, the design by Leo von Klenze—an ensemble consisting of a neoclassical colonnade and a romantic, Germanised statue—was implemented from 1843 to 1850. Ballbuben – a visit to FC Bayern

10. May 2022/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Ballbuben – a collage featuring FC Bayern Munich and the Allianz Arena

First, congratulations to FC Bayern Munich on winning the 2022 German Championship in the Bundesliga, now for the tenth time in a row. That’s a remarkable sporting achievement. The Bayern stadium, the arena named after a major sponsor, is also remarkable. The ‘inflatable boat’ has become an architectural landmark of the city of Munich. The design by the Basel architectural firm Herzog de Meuron consists of pneumatically pre-stressed cushions made of plastic film and can be illuminated in multiple colours. In addition to the club’s red for special occasions, it can also be green (St. Patrick’s Day), EU blue with stars, or rainbow colours. This makes the stadium a glowing attraction, especially at night, and a widely visible landmark. On numerous approaches to Munich Airport, it often signals ‘coming home’ as the first recognisable sign of the city. Read more

Max-Joseph-Platz in Munich

27. September 2021/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Collage of the buildings at Max-Joseph-Platz in Munich

During a walk through Munich, where I had already explored the Mariensäule on Marienplatz through my art, I also passed by Max-Joseph-Platz. There, my focus wasn’t so much on the centre of the square with its equestrian statue, where the surrounding façades only form the backdrop. Instead, I wanted to condense and capture the impression of the interplay between these buildings bordering the open space, with the different architectural styles, shapes and colours of their façades. In Munich’s Commuter Belt

16. June 2021/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Waste separation for optimal recycling of refuse is a German virtue: Yellow bags are filled with packaging material, and the “brown” bin with organic waste. In addition, there are “green” and “blue” bins, depending on the region for paper or glass, and a “black” bin for general waste. The image of a modern residential area in Munich’s commuter belt contains further typical contemporary aspects and contradictions of German society in the 2020s: environmental protection and the energy transition, mobility and real estate (the dream of owning one’s own home). Sunday stroll in the Olympiapark

15. November 2020/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The Föhn winds in mid-November brought another sunny and warm Sunday to the edge of the Alps, reaching all the way into Munich. As a result, many city dwellers headed out of their flats and into the parks to enjoy the few sunny hours outdoors once the fog had cleared. Olympiapark Munich was a popular destination – for a leisurely stroll or to play with the kids, for running, cycling or other sporting activities. Read more

A Typical Morning in Rush Hour

16. December 2018/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

A typical morning in Munich’s rush hour traffic. The usual jams stretch from the outskirts towards the city centre, for example, on the A9 to the Mittlerer Ring, as well as on alternative routes via various federal roads. Although for these routes, the term “rat runs” would be more fitting. Patience and composure are advantageous, although many drivers are becoming increasingly aggressive. Read more
