Summer night at the Angel of Peace

The Angel of Peace in the Maximiliansanlagen is one of the most beautiful viewpoints for the sunset in Munich city centre. A rectangular temple, topped by the column with the golden Angel of Peace, offers plenty of seating with a fantastic view: from above the staircases on both sides, you look along a visual axis over the fountain, the Luitpold Bridge and the Isar along western Prinzregentenstraße to the Prinz-Carl-Palais on the Altstadtring.

Today, the sun set directly behind the western end of Prinzregentenstraße (which was no coincidence). The high-shooting water jet glowed golden in the backlight – like a lightsaber from the Star Wars saga. Four water-spouting dolphin riders form further arcs of light. The transition from the “golden hour” to the “blue hour” was accompanied by a fantastic play of colours in the sky, always reflected by the water of the fountain.

The heat of the day turned into a mild summer night under a cloudless starry sky. The spot on the high banks of the Isar is popular with people of all ages, whether for the great view, a romantic meeting or an evening picnic with a cold drink – primarily beer or Aperol Spritz. A spot by the water basin promises a bit more refreshment than the seats on the stones, which still radiate the heat stored during the day.

Other hotspots for the sunset include the Olympiaberg, Nymphenburg Palace or the Hackerbrücke.
