Rounding off summer on Lake Chiemsee

24. September 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Two sailors sitting on a sailing boat on Lake Chiemsee, Bavaria, Germany

What could be better than spending the last calendar and weather-wise summer weekend outdoors – and this time not on a mountain, but on Lake Chiemsee, within sight of the Alps. At late summer temperatures, I was invited by a friend to go sailing and swimming on her sailing boat on the “Bavarian Sea”. Read more

A tour of the New Palace Oberschleißheim

31. August 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Collage of the Baroque interiors in Unterschleißheim Palace, Munich, Bavaria, Germany

It wasn’t until friends visited that I finally took a tour of the Baroque New Palace Oberschleißheim. I was already familiar with the palace gardens from several visits, but I hadn’t really focused on the interiors until now. Read more

Diving into the day: a morning ritual at Lake Fohnsee

14. July 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Storm clouds over the mountains and mist over the water on a sunny summer morning at Lake Fohnsee, Osterseen nature reserve, Bavaria, Germany

Diving into the day – my morning ritual during my stay at the campsite at Lake Fohnsee was a swim after sunrise. I’m still standing on the shore, admiring the panorama. The lake was still quiet then, before the waves from me and the other bathers destroyed the reflections on the almost perfectly smooth surface of the water. Read more

Quiet Hours at the Osterseen Lakes

6. July 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The glowing twilight sky reflected in Lake Fohnsee, Osterseen Nature Reserve, Bavaria, GermanyThe “Osterseen” nature reserve, with its approximately 20 large and small lakes, lies south of Lake Starnberg and belongs to the municipalities of Seeshaupt and Iffeldorf. The lake district is well connected by the Kochelsee railway or the nearby Munich-Garmisch motorway. The Osterseen lakes are therefore not an insider tip and not secluded, even if most of the traffic continues to Kochelsee or Walchensee, Murnau or Garmisch, the Bavarian Prealps, Wetterstein, Karwendel, Ammergau or one of the higher Alpine regions. Nevertheless, I found peace and solitude. Read more

Geigelstein: A Mountain with a View

29. June 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Sunrise on the flower mountain peak Geigelstein in the Chiemgau Alps, Bavaria, Germany

Geigelstein in the Chiemgau Alps impresses with its great prominence (relative height) and its extensive dominance. With an absolute height of 1,808 m, Geigelstein rises about 1,148 m above the surrounding landscape. This is its topographic prominence, i.e. the difference in height to the lowest col or valley floor that separates it from higher mountains. Read more

Sundowner with blues music

6. September 2024/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The local cultural association Cultiamo invited guests to a ‘sundowner’ with the Westendblues-Band in Goldachpark in Hallbergmoos. On a sunny and mild summer evening—the weather this year was a perfect match for the theme—the Munich-based group featuring singer Elisabeth Dumont, guitarist Peter Gerhartz and keyboardist Ronald Matthiä accompanied the sun on its way below the horizon with their soulful and atmospheric blues music. Scrub Clearance on the Roßalm

1. September 2024/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Alpine pasture clearing on the Roßalm in summer 2024, Chiemgau, Bavaria, Germany

During my last visit to the Bavarian Alps, I learned an old word: Schwenden. Schwenden is an old method of maintaining alpine pastures. It involves the laborious manual removal of unwanted bushes, shrubs, or young trees, especially mountain pines and alpine roses. This keeps the alpine meadows open as grazing areas for livestock.
