First Day in the Snow in the Mountains

5. December 2021/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Snow-covered mountain forests and the Wetterstein mountain massif in the afternoon sun reflected in the turquoise water of Lake Eibsee, Bavaria, Germany

I’m using a free Friday for a first warm-up tour in the snow with freshly waxed touring skis. After a cold front passed through, I was looking forward to the clearing sky with sun and fresh powder snow. I found perfect conditions on the still-closed ski slopes at Grubigstein near Lermoos. In addition, the ascent offers a great view of the Ehrwald Basin and the towering Wetterstein massif behind it, with the Zugspitze. Read more

Winter panorama from the Issentalkopf

Ski tourers resting on the Issentalkopf in front of a winter panorama of the Ehrwald basin, Ehrwalder Sonnenspitze, Zugspitze massif, Ammergau and Lechtal Alps

Just in time for Christmas, winter has provided enough snow, at least from 1,000 metres up, to undertake the first ski tour of the season. However, fresh snow and storms have also caused a significant avalanche risk in many places. Therefore, my choice for the first “warm-up tour” is the Ehrwalder Alm ski area. With the Issentalkopf (1,925 m), it offers a beautiful viewpoint as a destination and, due to its location behind the first mountain ranges of the Prealps and the Wetterstein massif, often has more snow than, for example, Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Islands in Lake Eibsee

20. October 2018/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Islands in Lake Eibsee: Autumnal trees glow on Ludwigsinsel in the turquoise water of Lake Eibsee in front of a shady mountain forest, Bavaria, Germany

In the deep blue water of Lake Eibsee lie eight or nine small islands, depending on how you count them, fringed with turquoise and crowned in autumn with groups of trees glowing in yellow and red. In the afternoon, the Schwarze Wand and Blaue Wand – steep mountain slopes with rocks and mountain forest on the western shore – lie in the shade, forming a dark backdrop to the autumnal colours of Ludwigsinsel, which is still bathed in bright sunshine.
