First Day in the Snow in the Mountains

Snow-covered mountain forests and the Wetterstein mountain massif in the afternoon sun reflected in the turquoise water of Lake Eibsee, Bavaria, Germany

I’m using a free Friday for a first warm-up tour in the snow with freshly waxed touring skis. After a cold front passed through, I was looking forward to the clearing sky with sun and fresh powder snow. I found perfect conditions on the still-closed ski slopes at Grubigstein near Lermoos. In addition, the ascent offers a great view of the Ehrwald Basin and the towering Wetterstein massif behind it, with the Zugspitze.

Sunset over the snow-covered winter landscape at Geroldsee and the panorama of the Karwendel Mountains, Bavaria, Germany

On the way home in the early afternoon, I made a stop to take photos at Lake Eibsee. I walked to the small bay with the famous “Hinkelstein” rock and the renowned panorama of Braxeninsel, Zugspitze and the Wetterstein mountains, reflected in the turquoise water. There, I was greeted by an almost perfectly still water surface and only a little ice, crisp, clear air and the low-lying sun, all dusted with powder snow. As the lake is already in shadow quite early at this time of year, I soon set off again and ended this magnificent day in the mountains with a winter sunset at Lake Geroldsee and its consistently impressive panorama with the Karwendel mountains.
