The Tower at Munich Airport

12. November 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

White control tower of Munich Airport MUC in the morning sun against a blue cloudless sky, Bavaria, Germany

The Munich Airport control tower is shaped like a torch and, at 78 metres high, is usually the only visible sign of one of Europe’s largest airports in the flat surroundings of the Erdinger Moos. From the Munich Airport tower, air traffic control monitors both the ground, i.e. the terminal apron, and the wide sky over Munich and Bavaria. Read more

Photographing Architecture with the Nikon 14-24 mm

Illuminated facade of BMW Welt with the pedestrian bridge in front of the Olympic Tower at night, Munich, Bavaria, Germany

For 20 years, I photographed architecture, panoramas, or people in their surroundings with the Nikon AF Nikkor 20 mm F 2.8 D and was always satisfied with its imaging performance. Since then, however, optics have improved, and the new full-frame sensors highlight the limitations of older lenses regarding sharpness, chromatic aberration, or vignetting. After recently getting a good deal on the Nikon AF-S 14-24 mm F 2.8 – undoubtedly one of the best current wide-angle lenses – I simply couldn’t resist. Read more

Summer Evening in the Olympic Park

16. August 2016/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Olympic Tower and Olympic Stadium with the summer festival in Munich's Olympic Park at twilight

On a warm summer evening, I drove to Munich’s Olympic Park, which I hadn’t visited for far too long. The Olympic Park is one of Munich’s largest green spaces, created from the concept of the ‘Green Olympic Games’ and the vision that citizens should appropriate and use the green spaces as a place of social freedom. The concept has worked, and so picnickers, strollers, families, joggers, cyclists, tourists, and couples in love – in other words, a cross-section of the entire population – populate the paths, banks, and lawns. Spring’s Arrival in Munich

20. March 2016/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Munich Town Hall at Marienplatz, Bavaria, Germany

Just in time for the start of calendar spring, Munich is bathed in sunshine. The city is already filled with many holidaymakers on the weekend before Holy Week. As always, many travellers head to Marienplatz around midday to admire the Glockenspiel. Read more

Traffic-free through the Luise-Kiesselbach Tunnel

2. November 2015/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

In the Luise-Kiesselbach Tunnel in Munich

After years of construction work at the major traffic hub in the south of Munich, where the middle ring road meets the A95 motorway from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the main lanes were opened to traffic in summer 2015. This brings with it the hope of an end to the long traffic jams, especially during rush hour and at weekends, when day-trippers head south to the mountains and the Alpine foothills in the morning and return in the evening.
