Autumn morning at Lake Kochelsee

22 April 2012/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Autumn morning on the shores of Lake Kochel with a view of the Herzogstand, Bavaria, Germany

The last of the morning mist drifts across the peaceful lake. The Herzogstand rises steeply behind the water; this popular Alpine peak is also the starting point for the scenic ridge hike over to the Heimgarten. But today, culture is on the agenda – on my way to numerous mountain tours, I’ve always just driven past this beautiful spot, as many others surely have too. This time, however, I’m staying to enjoy the view and visit the nearby Franz Marc Museum with its collection centred around Franz Marc and the “Blue Rider” artist group – something I can highly recommend to anyone.

Sunrise on Pleisenspitze

1 January 2012/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Even though I had already stood on the summit of Pleisenspitze (2,567 m) the day before, I didn’t want to miss the chance to do the tour again, as originally planned, for sunrise. Siggi, the hut warden, had predicted a sunny day for today, the first Sunday in November, despite yesterday’s persistent Föhn storm. He was right, as was his forecast that it would remain warm, dry, and predominantly sunny for the next three weeks, with winter arriving late. So, I crept out of the dormitory, where everyone was still fast asleep after the atmospheric hut evening. Read more

Hut Fun at Pleisenhütte

1 January 2012/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

After the summit experience on the Pleisenspitze, I enjoyed a delicious and fortifying dinner – venison goulash with dumplings. The evening atmosphere at Pleisenhütte is characterised by the fact that electric light is only available in the kitchen, and paraffin lamps or lovingly arranged candles illuminate all the other rooms – creating an absolutely cosy and homely ambience. Furthermore, hut warden Siggi and his family cater to guests’ wishes with great hospitality. It doesn’t take long before the guitar or accordion is brought out and a multi-voiced song rings through the air. Read more

On the Summit of Pleisenspitze (2,567 m) in the Karwendel

1 January 2012/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

After a longer rest at the Pleisen Hut I decided late in the afternoon to set off again and continue following the path to Pleisenspitze. Initially, the path led through dwarf pine forest, then became steeper, reaching the broad rocky ridge that leads to the summit from the south. Thanks to the mild and dry autumn, the further ascent over rocks and scree was completely snow-free on this first November weekend. The Foehn storm over the Alps also ensured comparatively mild temperatures, which, however, could not be perceived as such due to the strong gusts of wind. Read more

Foehn Storm Over the Inn Valley Range

1 January 2012/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

A mild autumn and a foehn storm brought unusually high temperatures of up to 20 degrees to the mountain valleys on this first November weekend. There was little to no snow on the mountains, making for ideal conditions for a late-season tour. I finally had the opportunity to tackle the Pleisenspitze (2567 m) in Karwendel, as the Pleisenhütte, halfway up, is open year-round on weekends, allowing the approximately 1600 metres of ascent to be split into a more pleasant two-day hike. In the Amphitheatre of the Memminger Hut

20 November 2011/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Memminger Hut, Upper Seewisee, Freispitze and Seekogel, Lechtal Alps, Tyrol, Austria

The Seescharte (2599 m) is a frequently used pass from the Lech Valley to the Inn Valley on the long-distance hiking trail E5. However, I reach it on the way from the Württemberger Haus via Großbergspitze and Großbergkopf to the Memminger Hut and on to Bach, where I started my round trip through the Lechtal Alps three days ago. On this sun-drenched summer day, a magnificent panorama opens up before me with the rocks of the Seeköpfe, the wild and steep ridges of the Freispitze, the three turquoise glowing Seewiseen, the grassy Seekogel and the Seeschartenspitze, which form a grand ensemble around the Memminger Hut. On the Lechtal High Trail to the Großbergspitze

20 November 2011/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

View from the Großbergspitze into the Obermedriol, Württemberger Haus, Lechtal Alps, Tyrol, Austria

After a restful night with pleasant company at the Württemberger Haus and a promising sunrise, I start the ascent through the Obermedriol to the Großbergspitze (2,635 m) in the morning freshness, to head from there over the ridge to the Großbergkopf (2,612 m) and Großbergjoch, then crossing scree slopes to the Seescharte (2,599 m) and on to the Memminger Hütte.
