Through the autumn forest at Lake Königssee

2 November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

From the mouth of the Eisbach at Lake Königssee, the hiking trail to the Kärlingerhaus winds in steep hairpins through the vibrant autumn forest – the view is beautiful and reminds me of 1970s photo wallpaper. The scenery feels almost Southern Alpine and is comparable to previous hikes in Ticino in autumn. The rhythm of the ascent and the impressions of the landscape create a euphoric high in me; it is a perfect day in nature. Read more

Kaunerwand and Saletalm at Königssee

1 November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Just a few minutes’ walk after arriving by boat at St. Bartholomä, I’m already enjoying the calming effect of the magnificent mountain scenery around Königssee. From the mouth of the Eisbach into the lake – I recommend this short walk to every visitor – I look east towards Obersee and the Saletalm, which lie in the shadow of the mountains in winter, no longer receive direct sunlight, and essentially turn into a freezer. That’s why the Salet stop is not served by boats in winter. Read more

Circular tour on the Guffert (2,195 m)

12 August 2013/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

On this Sunday morning, the Tegernsee region is still tucked under a grey blanket of clouds and drizzle, so the silhouette of the Bavarian Prealps is only faintly visible in the dawn light. Past the Achen Pass, things are already drying up, and by the time I park the car in Steinberg am Rofan, the first gaps in the clouds are appearing. The goal of my tour is the summit of the Guffert (2195 m), which offers an outstanding panoramic view due to its isolated position, making it an extremely popular hiking destination. Read more

3-Lakes Tour in the Mieming Range

29 July 2013/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

The hike from Ehrwald to Seebensee, Drachensee with the Coburger Hütte, Tajatörl, Brendlkar and Brendlsee offers diverse landscapes – from the lush summer alpine meadows near Ehrwald, the path leads through shady mountain forests up into sparser pine woods, past dark green mountain lakes and right up into the scree and rock landscapes of the high Mieming Range, where the last snowfields of winter still huddle. This popular circular tour can be completed in a day, but it’s worth planning a night at the Coburger Hütte to experience the much-celebrated evening view of the Wetterstein Massif. Additionally, there’s the lure of a summit tour or two on one of the challenging climbing routes or via ferratas, so you shouldn’t expect solitude on this trip. Read more

Morning Mood at Gotzenalm

13 October 2012/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

First, the new day’s first sunbeams reach the Watzmann, before the mountain peaks of the Steinernes Meer around the Funtenseetauern (2579 m) also glow in the morning sun. Gotzenalm, which offers this panoramic view, is popular with mountain bikers and hikers, especially for the circular hike via the Stahlhaus, Schneibstein and Seeleinsee, which is also suitable for experienced children. Additionally, the route via Wasseralm and Kärlingerhaus on Lake Funtensee can be extended into a larger circuit.

Just a few metres from this photo spot is also the famous “Feuerpalfen” viewpoint, offering views of the Watzmann and St. Bartholomä on Lake Königssee.

More pictures of Lake Königssee and Berchtesgaden National Park can be found in the “Germany” gallery

Sunrise at the Watzmann

22 September 2012/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

I’m standing in the fresh morning air and complete silence at the Feuerpalfen viewpoint near the Gotzenalm, over 1,000 metres above St. Bartholomä and the Königssee, looking up at the summit of the Watzmann, which is glowing in the first light of the sun. Read more

On the Jenner at Lake Königssee

22 September 2012/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The Jenner is the ultimate vantage point for views of Lake Königssee and the Watzmann in the Berchtesgadener Land. Since it’s accessible by cable car, it’s quite busy. At the viewpoint, I immediately notice several visitors taking “souvenir photos” of their soft toys with the panorama of Lake Königssee, the Watzmann and the Steinernes Meer in the background, which are then sent as emails to the children back home. This seems to be a current trend and a modern version of “Felix the Hare”, who wrote letters home about his travel adventures. Read more
