Kaunerwand and Saletalm at Königssee

Just a few minutes’ walk after arriving by boat at St. Bartholomä, I’m already enjoying the calming effect of the magnificent mountain scenery around Königssee. From the mouth of the Eisbach into the lake – I recommend this short walk to every visitor – I look east towards Obersee and the Saletalm, which lie in the shadow of the mountains in winter, no longer receive direct sunlight, and essentially turn into a freezer. That’s why the Salet stop is not served by boats in winter.

At this point, the hiking trail from St. Bartholomä to Kärlingerhaus, which has followed the lake so far and is also part of the long-distance Via Alpina trail, leads increasingly steeply up through the autumnal mountain forest into the Schrainbach Valley.

More pictures from Berchtesgaden National Park can also be found in the Germany Gallery.
