Lake Federa between autumn and winter

5. November 2025/0 Comments/in Dolomites/by Matthias

I was actually two weeks too late for a visit to Lake Federa near Cortina d'Ampezzo: the peak of the yellow-golden larch colours had already passed in the higher altitudes.

On the way back from my trip to Florence, I added a stay in the autumnal Dolomites. I was actually two weeks too late for the visit to Lake Federa near Cortina d’Ampezzo: the peak of the yellow-golden larch colours had already passed in these mountain regions. The trees were already shedding their needles and the nights were getting very frosty for sleeping in the roof tent. Despite a good down sleeping bag and insulation, it’s still uncomfortable and always takes a lot of effort. Since it had snowed in the previous days, the snow-capped higher mountain regions already signalled the transition to winter.

In the Heart of Paros – Lefkes, Marpissa and Prodromos

2. October 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

A woman in a hat photographs the Evangelismos Church in the old town of Marpissa, Paros, Greece

Anyone who only knows Paros from its beaches and coastline misses the island’s more authentic side. Beyond the beach tourism, in the quieter island interior, lie three villages that still feel as if time has passed more slowly: Lefkes, Marpissa and Prodromos. Here, Paros shows its unvarnished side – complete with crumbling walls and rubbish, decay and renewal. It is precisely the tension between old and new, becoming and passing, past and future that gives these places their special charm. Read more

Hiking through Paros Park

2. October 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

On the hike through wild rocky coast to the lighthouse in Paros Park
Paros Park, a pioneer of its kind in the Cyclades, is a nature and culture park covering an 800-hectare peninsula near Naoussa with great geological and historical importance. The organisation behind it relies on donations and volunteering. The nature park welcomes visitors all year round for a variety of ecological and cultural activities, or simply for a hike on well-marked trails across the peninsula to the island’s northernmost point. Geigelstein: A Mountain with a View

29. June 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Sunrise on the flower mountain peak Geigelstein in the Chiemgau Alps, Bavaria, Germany

Geigelstein in the Chiemgau Alps impresses with its great prominence (relative height) and its extensive dominance. With an absolute height of 1,808 m, Geigelstein rises about 1,148 m above the surrounding landscape. This is its topographic prominence, i.e. the difference in height to the lowest col or valley floor that separates it from higher mountains. Read more

Sunrise on the Breitenstein with a view from the Bockstein summit into the Chiemgau, Bavaria, Germany

Having already scouted a perfect spot for the sunrise during the evening tour of the Breitenstein, after the trip to Alsace, nothing stood in the way of another visit to the Bockstein summit. Read more

Birkenstein Pilgrimage Church

1. May 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Maria Himmelfahrt pilgrimage church in Birkenstein in the morning sun, Fischbachau, Bavaria, Germany

The Maria Himmelfahrt Birkenstein pilgrimage church in Fischbachau, Upper Bavaria, is a true folk sanctuary. Located in the Leitzach Valley in the Mangfall Mountains at the foot of the Breitenstein, it is famous for its late medieval statue of the Virgin Mary, which has been venerated here as a miraculous image since 1673. Every year, numerous pilgrims come here from near and far. During my visit early on the morning of 1 May, I found two touching elderly ladies busy preparing the outdoor altar for the arrival of several walking pilgrimages. Read more

Hike to the Lamsenjochhütte

1. October 2024/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

View from the western Lamsenjoch to the eastern Lamsenjoch with the Lamsenjochhütte under snow-capped peaks of the Karwendel in autumn, Tyrol, Austria

I’ll start this article with the end of this short tour in the Karwendel. That’s when I saw the happy faces of a hiking group from Landsberg am Lech at the bus stop at Ahornboden. After a great tour via the Falkenhütte and Lamsenjochhütte, they experienced another highlight of their hike that morning on the summit of the Hahnenkampl (2,080 m). The clouds broke just as they were crossing the summit.
