Sunrise over the autumnal Ahornboden

7. October 2018/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Mist drifts across the autumnal Ahornboden in front of the rock faces of the Karwendel Mountains at reddish dawn, Tyrol, Austria

The last glow of the stars fades in the rising twilight. Wisps of fog envelop the autumnally coloured sycamore maples in a milky veil. Behind the Great Ahornboden, the mighty north faces of the main ridge of the Karwendel Mountains rise darkly. The peaks of Eiskarlspitze, Spritzkarspitze, and Grubenkarspitze all lie above 2,600 m, thus towering approximately 1,400 metres above the Engtal valley. Gradually, the first scattered light of the rising sun colours the mountain peaks red, plastically sculpting ridges and couloirs from the formerly dark mass.

Berliner Hütte and Schönbichler Horn

4. August 2018/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Berliner Hütte (2,044m) in the Zillertal, Tyrol

The Berliner Hütte in the Zillertal was built in 1879 as a simple mountain shelter at an altitude of 2,044 metres and was later expanded into a magnificent ensemble that looks more like a manor house. For this reason, the Berliner Hütte was even heritage-listed in 1997. Nestled in a wild mountain landscape with glaciers and steep rocky peaks, appearing defiant and robust from the outside, the contrast with the comfortable, magnificently furnished rooms inside is quite impressive. Full Moon over Chiemgau

3. February 2018/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The full moon over Samerberg in Chiemgau, Bavaria, Germany

The full moon rises golden into the night sky above Samerberg in Chiemgau, as I walk up to the Breitenberghaus with colleagues on a short after-work hike. It’s Kaiserschmarrn evening, a wonderful opportunity to combine the experience of nature and culinary delights. Read more

Winter Dream in Powder Snow on the Breitenstein

31. December 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Ski tourers resting at the Hubertushütte below the summit of the Breitenstein, Bavaria

Just before the turn of the year, a sunny, cloudless morning after a night of fresh snow lured me into the mountains – and I was rewarded with a winter wonderland. At sunrise, I lingered to take photos at the baroque pilgrimage church of Wilparting on the Irschenberg. From there, a magnificent view of today’s tour destination – the Breitenstein (1,622 m) in the Wendelstein Group – was already visible. In winter, ski tourers, snowshoe hikers, and winter walkers meet on the Breitenstein, as an ascent without skis/snowshoes is still possible depending on snow conditions and weather. Read more

Autumn Hike in the Kaiser Mountains

10. December 2017/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

The peaks of Kleine Halt, Gamshalt and Ellmauer Halt in the Kaiser Mountains glow in the evening sun, Vorderkaiserfeldenhütte, Tyrol, Austria

East of Kufstein, the gateway to Tyrol, lies the Kaiser Mountains. The two mountain ranges, Zahmer Kaiser in the north and Wilder Kaiser in the south, are separated by the Kaisertal valley. Most of the mountains are a nature reserve. From Kufstein, an easy path leads up to the Ritzau-Alm and further to the sun terrace of the Vorderkaiserfeldenhütte. From there, on a clear day, you can enjoy a panorama stretching from the Wilder Kaiser over the Zillertal Alps, Inn Valley, Rofan Mountains, Karwendel, all the way to the Wendelstein. Read more

Hiking up Corna Trentapassi on Lake Iseo

25. June 2017/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

The steep, rocky flanks of Corna Trentapassi rise steeply over 1,000 m from the eastern shore of Lake Iseo between Marone and Pisogne. The mountain forms a massive barrier towards the northern end of the lake and simultaneously creates its narrowest point. This is why Corna Trentapassi always seems within reach from Riva di Solto on the opposite shore. The summit sits at 1,248 m and offers an outstanding 360-degree panorama over the entire Lago d’Iseo, the Brescia Prealps, and the Bergamo Alps. From my accommodation in Marone, the summit cross is visible, so of course I couldn’t resist going for a hike up there. Read more

Hike over Punta Almana on Lake Iseo

25. June 2017/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Alpine meadows below Punta Almana on Lake Iseo, Lombardy, Italy

For a hike, the area around Lake Iseo is rich in routes, from challenging mountain tours to easy strolls. There are many panoramic peaks that rise steeply around the lake, such as Corna Trentapassi or Punta Almana. Punta Almana (1,390 m) even offers an easy traverse along an airy ridge; depending on your skill level, there’s also a more exposed variant over scree and rocky sections. Read more
