At the end of a sunny autumn day at Geroldsee, nature puts on one last great show in the twilight spectacle of colourful autumn foliage – the alpenglow of the northern Karwendel range, caused by the red scattered light after sunset. Read more

The Penwith Peninsula in the far west of Cornwall entices with impressive coastal landscapes and small, lively harbour towns and villages. Historically shaped by fishing, agriculture, and mining, tourism has long been added – magnificent sandy beaches, walking trails like the South West Coast Path, art, and culture attract numerous travellers to the westernmost tip of the British Isles – including Land’s End, the westernmost point on the wild and rugged rocky coast, with only the rough Isles of Scilly lying offshore. As everywhere in Cornwall, the region benefits from the Gulf Stream, which ensures a mild climate. Read more

The beauty of Kynance Cove with its two beaches, which only appear at low tide, is certainly one of the highlights of the Cornish coast. For those not hiking the entire South West Coast Path, rounding the southernmost point of the British mainland, Lizard Point with its distinctive lighthouse, offers an easy and varied day hike that reaches its climax in the afternoon at Kynance Cove. The South West Coast Path in South West England is the longest National Trail in Great Britain at 630 miles, offering spectacular landscapes with wild and rugged coasts, stunning beaches and lush gardens. This coastal path begins on the shores of the Irish Sea inMinehead, Somerset, then runs along the north coast of Exmoor and leads south to Cornwall, which it circles completely. In doing so, you pass Land’s End, the westernmost point, and Lizard Point, the southernmost point of the British mainland, before the path runs eastwards along the English Channel coast to Devon and finally ends in Dorset at Poole Harbour. It takes roughly seven to eight weeks to complete the entire route. Read more

The Tölzer Hut in Karwendel, a mountain hut of the German Alpine Club at an altitude of 1,825 m, opened its 2016 hut season on Father’s Day at the beginning of May. At this time, however, the Tölzer Hut was still deeply covered in snow, as spring brought heavy snowfall and cold spells well into May. However, a high-pressure system finally promised sun and good long-distance visibility; since it was also a new moon, there should also be a star-studded night sky to see. Read more

After many years, I’ve published another travel report: my article and photos from the circular hike through the Rätikon in summer 2015, via Totalphütte, Schesaplana, Carschinahütte, Sulzfluh and Lindauer Hütte, have appeared in the current SchwabenAlpin, the member magazine of the Swabian section of the German Alpine Club. The article can be read in the download of issue 2/2016 from page 19. The photos can also be viewed individually in the Austria and Switzerland galleries. Cover copyright: DAV Sektion Schwaben

The end of 2015 also remained without significant snowfall, even high up in the Swiss Alps, thus concluding a very mild year overall. From Hüttlisboden (1,510 m), which at this time is usually a beautiful resting spot on the popular ski tour to Gulmen (1,798 m), I gaze at the sunset over the Glarus Alps behind the deep, fog-filled valley floor with Lake Walen.
