Alpenglow over the Karwendel

Alpenglow over the Karwendel at Geroldsee after sunset, Bavaria, Germany

At the end of a sunny autumn day at Geroldsee, nature puts on one last great show in the twilight spectacle of colourful autumn foliage – the alpenglow of the northern Karwendel range, caused by the red scattered light after sunset.

The hummocky meadows just above the north side of the lake offer great conditions for photographers – and quite a few are gathered there with me at the moment of sunset – because the “humps” have created numerous level spots on the grassy slope where you can easily and comfortably set up a tripod. The rich autumn colours of the forest glow in resonance with the limestone cliffs of the Karwendel, while the dark blue-violet transition to the shadows of the night is already appearing in the sky above.
