The Penwith Peninsula in Cornwall

30. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Beach walkers at low tide on the sandy beach of Sennen Cove, Cornwall, UK

The Penwith Peninsula in the far west of Cornwall entices with impressive coastal landscapes and small, lively harbour towns and villages. Historically shaped by fishing, agriculture, and mining, tourism has long been added – magnificent sandy beaches, walking trails like the South West Coast Path, art, and culture attract numerous travellers to the westernmost tip of the British Isles – including Land’s End, the westernmost point on the wild and rugged rocky coast, with only the rough Isles of Scilly lying offshore. As everywhere in Cornwall, the region benefits from the Gulf Stream, which ensures a mild climate. Read more

Cornish Slate at Trebarwith Strand

23. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Rocky coast with sea surf at the beach access to Trebarwith Strand, Cornwall, Great Britain

At Trebarwith Strand on Cornwall’s north coast, the colours of the sea, rocky coastline and sky often combine to create dramatic or mystical moods in a unique natural landscape. A long valley leads down to the coast, where at low tide, access to the sandy beach is possible over sloping slabs of layered, dark slate. At high tide, however, the surf crashes thunderously against the rocks. Read more

The dream beach of Kynance Cove in Cornwall

The rocks and beaches at Kynance Cove on the Lizard Peninsula, Cornwall, Great Britain

The beauty of Kynance Cove with its two beaches, which only appear at low tide, is certainly one of the highlights of the Cornish coast. For those not hiking the entire South West Coast Path, rounding the southernmost point of the British mainland, Lizard Point with its distinctive lighthouse, offers an easy and varied day hike that reaches its climax in the afternoon at Kynance Cove. Hiking the South West Coast Path

23. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Rocky coast on the Lizard Peninsula, the southernmost point of the British mainland, Cornwall, England

The South West Coast Path in South West England is the longest National Trail in Great Britain at 630 miles, offering spectacular landscapes with wild and rugged coasts, stunning beaches and lush gardens. This coastal path begins on the shores of the Irish Sea inMinehead, Somerset, then runs along the north coast of Exmoor and leads south to Cornwall, which it circles completely. In doing so, you pass Land’s End, the westernmost point, and Lizard Point, the southernmost point of the British mainland, before the path runs eastwards along the English Channel coast to Devon and finally ends in Dorset at Poole Harbour. It takes roughly seven to eight weeks to complete the entire route. Read more

Marylebone High Street Brunch

3. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Inside the Coco Momo Cafe on Marylebone High Street, London, Great Britain

After a long walk through the consumer paradise of London’s Regent Street and Oxford Street, and an extensive browse of designer fashion at Selfridges department store, we decided to escape the hustle and bustle. We followed Baker Street north, then turned onto Marylebone High Street. There you’ll find small but very appealing shops – fashion, design, or books. For the latter, the amazed traveller will discover the famous travel bookshop Daunt Books, whose Edwardian gallery is reminiscent of a classic library. Read more

The Humour of the Yeomen Warders of the Tower of London

2. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Yeoman Warder during a tourist tour of the Tower of London

The “Yeomen Warders” evolved from the bodyguard of the English kings and are now both guards and museum guides at the Tower of London, a ring fortress with origins in the 11th century, where the priceless Crown Jewels are kept today. Yeomen Warders are all former members of the British Army and wear a dark blue tunic with a red collar as their uniform. The guards are also known as “Beefeaters”, with several explanations for the origin of this term. Read more

Full Moon over the Thames

2. October 2016/0 Comments/in Great Britain/by Matthias

Full moon over Tower Bridge and the Thames, London, Great Britain

Slowly, the full moon rises from the city haze, gaining definition and detail against the silhouette of the buildings along the Thames embankment and the majestically lit Tower Bridge behind the museum ship HMS Belfast. One of those rare, mild and dry summer evenings for London draws people out onto the riverside promenades with their pub, cafe and restaurant terraces. Read more
