Lake Kochel – Magic of a mild autumn night

26. September 2023/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

I am standing on a wooden pier at Lake Kochel during the glowing dawn, Bavaria, Germany

There are places that immediately cast a spell on you, places that enchant. Lake Kochel on a mild autumn night is undoubtedly one of them. My base for the night was Schlehdorf on the western shore of Lake Kochel. Since most of the traffic is in Kochel and on the road over the Kesselberg to Lake Walchensee, it’s much quieter here in the shadow of the rocky north faces of the Herzogstand. Read more

Out and about in Tjurpannan Nature Reserve

Glowing sunset over the rocks in Tjurpannan Nature Reserve in the archipelago of the Swedish west coast

A hike through Tjurpannan Nature Reserve on Sweden’s west coast culminates the beauty of this coastal landscape in a small area. Heathland and freshwater lakes, smooth-polished granite cliffs, islands and the open sea. Read more

Skanör and Falsterbo – colourful beach huts, dunes and sandy beach

17. July 2023/0 Comments/in Sweden/by Matthias

Skanör and Falsterbo was our first destination when we finally returned to Sweden after many years. At that time, we had only briefly visited the lido with its colourful beach huts in the dunes on the fine sandy beach on the last day before departing by ferry from nearby Trelleborg. Therefore, we really wanted to see the place again. This time, we travelled via Denmark, as we had chosen Copenhagen as an intermediate stop on our journey. From there, it was only a short drive over the Öresund Bridge to Scania, Sweden’s southernmost province. A few kilometres further south, we finally reached the Falsterbo peninsula and its magnificent sandy beaches. Read more

‘Oimzeit’ is the most wonderful time

11. June 2023/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Yellow blooming globeflowers on a green alpine meadow in the Tyrolean Alps against the backlight of the sun at sunset in spring, Austria

Oimzeit (alpine pasture time) is the most wonderful time – that’s what it says on one of the alpine huts, and I couldn’t agree more. After the cattle drive at the end of last summer, I visited Ackernalm again for the first time this year. Yellow blooming globeflowers shone on the lush green meadows. The cowbells’ jingling can be heard from afar, forming a constant backdrop of sound. In the evening, I sat on the Grabenbergalm below the Fuchsloch in the last rays of the evening sun, looking out at the Schinder, Halserspitz, and Blaubergkamm behind the Brandenberger Ache.

Wasigenstein Castle Ruins

21. May 2023/0 Comments/in France/by Matthias

Neck ditch and keep of the medieval Groß-Wasigenstein castle ruins on a rock, Wasgau, Alsace, France

In the Wasgau, medieval castle ruins aren’t always found on mountain peaks. Their builders often found strategically located, free-standing rock formations on hillsides or in valleys to be sufficient. The fortresses seem to literally grow out of these rock structures, with the Fleckenstein ruins being an outstanding example. Some of these rock castles, however, are hidden in what is now mature forest. Read more

The Wegelnburg in the Wasgau

20. May 2023/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Star-shaped beams from a headlamp on the Wegelnburg in front of the panorama of the Palatinate Forest at dawn

A new spring day began with the glimmer of dawn over the mountains of the Palatinate Forest. I was standing on the Wegelnburg castle ruins, the highest castle complex in the Palatinate, looking out over a wide panorama featuring the Dahner Felsenland and the Wasgau. This is the name of the wooded area that stretches across both sides of the border between Germany and France. Read more

An Autumn Morning at Passo di Giau

17. October 2022/0 Comments/in Dolomites/by Matthias

Sunrise at the Giau Pass in the Dolomites with the glowing rock faces of Ra Gusela, Nuvolau, Averau, Tofane, Croda Rossa, Province of Belluno, Italy

Wow, what a colourful start to an autumn day in the Dolomites. Passo di Giau is, purely scenically, a highlight of any Dolomites trip. At least, it seemed that way to the group of Chinese photographers who, along with me and many others, marvelled at the 360-degree panorama on the scenic ridge next to the pass. To the north, Ra Gusela rises, then to the west Nuvolau – you can just spot the mountain hut on the rock face – and Averau. To the east, with the 5 Torri in front of the mighty Tofane massif and the Cristallo group, lie other famous mountains of the Ampezzo Dolomites. Far to the north, the peak of Hohe Gaisl then juts out. This already belongs to the Pragser Dolomites. A part of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo of the Sesto Dolomites also stands out. Read more
