Wild Wetterstein Mountains

22. June 2014/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

On a humid early summer’s day, towering clouds form around the peaks of the Wetterstein Mountains – Alpspitze, Zugspitze and Hochblassen remain hidden, with only the Mauerschartenkopf and the Hohe Gaifkopf surrounded by drifting clouds. I watch this dramatic spectacle relaxedly from the terrace of the Schachenhaus, even as the first thunderstorms approach from the east.

Dawn over the Karwendel

1. December 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The last stars still outshine the slowly brightening morning sky over the Karwendel. As the Earth rotates towards the sun, the sky cycles through the entire colour spectrum until the first direct sunbeams spread a comforting warmth on this frosty November morning. This time, I’m enjoying the ever-impressive experience of a quiet and peaceful sunrise on the summit of Roßstein (1,697 m) in the Bavarian Alps. Read more

Panorama from Roßstein (1,697m)

1. December 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The summit of Roßstein (1,697 m) in the Isarwinkel is a powerful place with a 360-degree panorama and the option of magnificent sunrises and sunsets. Roßstein and the slightly higher Buchstein (1,702 m) form a twin peak, between which the Tegernseer Hütte has found a scenic and sheltered spot in the saddle, often compared to an eagle’s nest. Sunrise over the Tegernseer Hütte

1. December 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The Tegernseer Hütte is dramatically nestled between the peaks of Roßstein (1,697 m) and Buchstein (1,702 m), perched directly above a vertical rock face. While the Buchstein can only be reached with some light climbing, the summit of the Roßstein is an easy walk of just a few minutes. The panorama is immense – stretching from the Bavarian Alpine Foreland and the Isarwinkel across the Wetterstein, Karwendel and Rofan ranges, all the way to the Main Chain of the Alps. Read more

Border experience on the Blauberge

30. November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

A few kilometres south of Lake Tegern lie the Blauberge, whose east-west ridge line marks a border not only geographically but also politically – specifically, the one between Germany and Austria. Read more

Sunrise over Lake Königssee

2. November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

After a perfect autumn day in Berchtesgaden National Park with the morning boat trip across Lake Königssee, the impressive panoramas at St. Bartholomä, the climb through the colourful autumn forest and the peaceful evening atmosphere at Lake Funtensee, I head up the short path through the still dark mountain forest to the Feldkogel the next morning to experience the sunrise panorama with the Stuhljoch, Hagengebirge, Watzmann massif, Lake Königssee and the Steinernes Meer. Evening Mood at Funtensee

2. November 2013/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

After the ascent from Königssee through the Schrainbach Valley and the Saugasse, which was in shadow for a long time, I reach the warming autumn sun again at Ofenloch and look back at the Watzmann. Shortly after, I stand at the Kärlingerhaus with Lake Funtensee below it, its dark waters reflecting the snow-capped peaks of Stuhljoch, Funteseetauern, Grießkogel, and Stuhlgrabenkogel. Although Lake Funtensee in Berchtesgaden National Park is considered one of Germany’s coldest places and exhibits interesting meteorological phenomena with layers of cold and warm air, on this late October day, the Föhn wind ensures pleasant temperatures, even throughout the night.
