Storm clouds over the Schachenhaus

The weather kitchen is brewing over the Bavarian Prealps and the day’s humidity will soon discharge in a thunderstorm. Before that, however, the sunset reveals one last dramatic display of colours over the panorama of the Ester Mountains, Elmau and the Wettersteinwand near the Schachenhaus.
The Schachen above Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Elmau is worth seeing not just for Ludwig II’s Royal House, but primarily for the outstanding views so cherished by the King – especially of the Wetterstein Massif with the Reintal, Hochblassen, Zugspitze or Alpspitze. In the rock faces above the Schachen, you can also spot the Meilerhütte in a narrow saddle at the crossing to the Leutasch Valley.
