Autumnal mood at Lake Achensee

13. October 2019/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

View from Vorderunnütz of the mountain landscape with autumnal mountain forests and the turquoise fjord-like Lake Achensee, Tyrol, Austria

The Lake Achensee lies like a fjord in a deep incision between the Rofan and Karwendel mountains. On its shores, mountain forests rise steeply towards rocky peaks and ridges, while the villages of Achenkirch, Maurach and Pertisau lie in the flat valley sections amidst still-green meadows. The autumn-coloured larches add splashes of colour to the dark green of the spruce and pine forests. A white veil of clouds hangs in the sky, which has a warm, milky effect on the light of the already low-lying sun and, in combination, creates a light and colour atmosphere that is unique throughout the seasons. Berlin High Trail via the Mörchenscharte

22. September 2019/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Mountains, glaciers on the Berlin High Trail to the Mörchenscharte above the Berliner Hütte in the evening sun, Zillertal, Tyrol, Austria

The transition from late summer to autumn often brings incomparable impressions to the high mountains of the Alps. The grass on the slopes is already taking on a yellowish-brown hue. The now significantly shorter days, however, offer longer periods with a low sun and flat light, which sculpts the landscape vividly. Long tours, on the other hand, already require the use of headlamps at dusk. In return, the weather is often more stable and there is less threat of thunderstorms. For all these reasons, our small group wanted to go on one last two-day tour on the Berlin High Trail towards the end of September, before the high-altitude huts closed for the season. Read more

Evening stroll through Korčula

10. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

View of the medieval alleys and buildings of the historic Old Town of Korčula in front of the Pelješac peninsula at sunset, Southern Dalmatia, Croatia

The summer day’s heat was blown away by a fresh sea breeze. These winds make the strait between the island of Korčula and Pelješac so popular with surfers and sailors. The low evening sun made the natural stone walls of the buildings in the medieval old town of Korčula shimmer in gold. Read more

In the Dalmatian archipelago – Vela Luka on Korčula

9. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Sunrise over Korčula island, the Pelješac peninsula and the Croatian Makarska Riviera from Mount Hum near Vela Luka, Korčula, Croatia

I stand curiously on the upper deck of the ferry from Split and take in the first impressions as we enter the bay of Vela Luka. While a typical Croatian rocky coastline with beautiful swimming coves passes by, the harbour draws closer. The town surrounds the entire rear area of the bay. Above the long harbour promenade, the houses stretch up the slopes of the surrounding hills. In the days of ancient Greece, the island was still lushly covered with dark forests, which is why it was called Korkyra Melaina, Black Island. The name Korčula was later derived from this. The name remained, and fortunately (dark) forests are present once again. Long, green hill ranges with macchia and pine forests, fertile valleys with olive groves, vines and fruit orchards define the island’s landscape. Read more

Panorama at Sveti Salvadur Church

5. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

View through the arches of the facade of Sv. Salvadur Chapel on Cres to the sea in sunshine, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

From the town of Cres, on the island of Cres in Croatia, a scenic circular hike leads to Sveti Salvadur Church. The small, whitewashed church sits on a hillside and offers a magnificent panorama over the Bay of Cres, towards Valun and as far as the Istrian coast.

Forggensee and Royal Castles

21. June 2019/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle with Tegelberg and Säuling are reflected in the last evening light on the calm surface of Lake Forggensee. Fortunately, from this viewpoint near Rieden, the traffic and crowds that prevail directly at the royal castles are not noticeable. This panorama makes it clear why Ludwig II built his castle in this theatrical Alpine setting, majestically resting above the plain and surrounded by rocky mountain peaks. Read more

Panorama of Mali Lošinj at sunset

16. September 2018/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

The port town of Mali Lošinj and the island of Lošinj with the Osoršćica mountain range after sunset, Lošinj, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

Above Mali Lošinj, the largest town on the island of Lošinj in the Kvarner Bay on the Croatian Adriatic coast, there is a viewpoint on the Kalvarija ridge. It’s the ideal spot to enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine and local delicacies – a fish or meat/cheese platter. While the spot used to be freely accessible, the bar Providenca has now opened there. Read more
