Hike to Krivica Bay on Lošinj

16. September 2018/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Headland with rocky coast, pine forest and turquoise sea at Krivica Bay on Lošinj island, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

The headland shown is located in the south of Lošinj at the well-known Krivica Bay. This bay forms a sheltered anchorage frequented by many sailing boats and yachts. The hike to the protected pebble beach or the rocky coast is also well worth it for swimmers. To get there, you can park on the ridge near the St. Ivan chapel on the road from Veli Lošinj to Mrtvaska and walk down to the sea – though you’ll face a half-hour climb and 230 metres of elevation on the way back. Straw bales – remnants of the harvesting machines

1. August 2017/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Straw bales on a mown grain field in Bavaria

Straw bales on stubble fields represent summer and heat, ripeness and fertility. Straw rolls or blocks lie in the landscape of the Erdinger Moos like leftovers from the digestion of harvesting machines, such as combine harvesters or balers. From early morning until late at night, the combine harvesters are now eating their way through the fields to bring in the grain harvest in time during the dry days before thunderstorms or steady rain. Behind the harvesters, plumes of dust settle over the hot land until the next thundery shower cleans the air again. Next to the golden-yellow stubble fields, many green maize fields tower up, forming visual barriers and corridors along the roads as they grow taller. Read more

Hummocky meadows at Lake Geroldsee

4. December 2016/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Lake Geroldsee and the Karwendel surrounded by colourful meadows and

Lake Geroldsee (or Wagenbrüchsee) is picturesquely nestled amongst hummocky meadows and forests between the Ester Mountains, the Wetterstein and the Karwendel. In summer, it is a popular swimming lake and a favourite year-round resting spot for hiking, mountain biking, skiing or snowshoeing tours between Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Walchensee, Krün and Mittenwald. Summer Evening in the Olympic Park

16. August 2016/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Olympic Tower and Olympic Stadium with the summer festival in Munich's Olympic Park at twilight

On a warm summer evening, I drove to Munich’s Olympic Park, which I hadn’t visited for far too long. The Olympic Park is one of Munich’s largest green spaces, created from the concept of the ‘Green Olympic Games’ and the vision that citizens should appropriate and use the green spaces as a place of social freedom. The concept has worked, and so picnickers, strollers, families, joggers, cyclists, tourists, and couples in love – in other words, a cross-section of the entire population – populate the paths, banks, and lawns. Auckland Sky Tower

11. January 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand Landscapes/by Matthias

Auckland Sky Tower, North Island, New Zealand

The modern design of Auckland’s Sky Tower symbolizes New Zealand’s emergence into the new millennium. Situated on a narrow stretch of the North Island, this vibrant city lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea.
Auckland is home to one of the world’s largest urban Polynesian populations. Its rich cultural diversity, shaped by people from many different backgrounds, is especially evident in the city’s lively nightlife, vibrant cultural scene, and relaxed atmosphere.

Sunset at Ketetahi Hut

11. January 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand Landscapes, Tongariro National Park/by Matthias

View from the Ketetahi Hut, Tongariro National Park, North Island, New Zealand

After crossing the rugged volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park along the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Ketetahi Hut, near the Ketetahi hot springs, is a popular place to rest.
Perched on a sunny terrace on the slopes of the North Crater, this remarkable spot offers breathtaking views across Lake Rotoaira towards Lake Taupo. It remains one of my absolute favorite places in New Zealand and throughout the national parks.
I will never forget the sunsets here, or those unforgettable nights when the distant lights of Taupo and the twinkling stars seemed to merge into a magical universe.

Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook

11. January 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand Landscapes/by Matthias

Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook in the New Zealand Southern Alps in autumn

The golden hues of autumn contrast beautifully with the brilliant blue of the lakes and the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. Coming from Lake Tekapo, the road climbs over a hill, and suddenly a majestic panorama unfolds, revealing Mount Cook and Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.
I would love to stop immediately and take in this breathtaking moment. But apparently, many travelers before me had the same idea, possibly leading to accidents. No-stopping signs appearing every twenty meters leave me no choice but to continue driving.
Incidentally, autumn tends to bring more stable weather conditions, increasing the chances of enjoying unobstructed views of the mountains beneath clear skies.
