Early Season in Lazise

21. March 2026/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

The sun sets golden directly behind the entrance to the Old Harbour of Lazise on Lake Garda; Veneto, Italy

On the south-eastern shore of Lake Garda lies Lazise, one of the region’s most charming towns – a historical gem that impressively combines history, culture, and a Mediterranean way of life. A stay in Lazise in late winter, with the first signs of spring, was a completely different experience from a classic summer holiday – quieter, clearer, and more intense. Read more

When early-born rosy-fingered Eos appeared

4. October 2025/0 Comments/in Greece/by Matthias

Dawn over Parikia Bay, Paros Island, Cyclades, Greece

“When early-born rosy-fingered Eos appeared” or, depending on the translation, “When then the rosy-fingered Eos, the morning, appeared” – the verse comes from Homer’s Odyssey and refers to the goddess of the dawn in Greek mythology, Eos. The verse is used several times as a formulaic expression to describe the sunrise. “Rosy-fingered” refers to the coloured rays that paint the morning sky. Eos is the sister of the sun god Helios and the moon goddess Selene. Read more

Quiet Hours at the Osterseen Lakes

6. July 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The glowing twilight sky reflected in Lake Fohnsee, Osterseen Nature Reserve, Bavaria, GermanyThe “Osterseen” nature reserve, with its approximately 20 large and small lakes, lies south of Lake Starnberg and belongs to the municipalities of Seeshaupt and Iffeldorf. The lake district is well connected by the Kochelsee railway or the nearby Munich-Garmisch motorway. The Osterseen lakes are therefore not an insider tip and not secluded, even if most of the traffic continues to Kochelsee or Walchensee, Murnau or Garmisch, the Bavarian Prealps, Wetterstein, Karwendel, Ammergau or one of the higher Alpine regions. Nevertheless, I found peace and solitude. Read more

Geigelstein: A Mountain with a View

29. June 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Sunrise on the flower mountain peak Geigelstein in the Chiemgau Alps, Bavaria, Germany

Geigelstein in the Chiemgau Alps impresses with its great prominence (relative height) and its extensive dominance. With an absolute height of 1,808 m, Geigelstein rises about 1,148 m above the surrounding landscape. This is its topographic prominence, i.e. the difference in height to the lowest col or valley floor that separates it from higher mountains. Read more

Evening Stroll Through Dresden

3. June 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Panorama of Dresden's Old Town at dusk with Frauenkirche, Brühl's Terrace, Residenzschloss, Hofkirche and Augustus Bridge, Saxony, Germany

Over the past few years, I’ve been to Dresden for business quite a few times. During these visits, I watched as the gaps in the Old Town were gradually filled, and cranes and construction fences disappeared from the cityscape, only to reappear elsewhere. Read more

Summer Sunrise on the Breitenstein

20. May 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Sunrise on the Breitenstein with a view from the Bockstein summit into the Chiemgau, Bavaria, Germany

Having already scouted a perfect spot for the sunrise during the evening tour of the Breitenstein, after the trip to Alsace, nothing stood in the way of another visit to the Bockstein summit. Read more

Birkenstein Pilgrimage Church

1. May 2025/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Maria Himmelfahrt pilgrimage church in Birkenstein in the morning sun, Fischbachau, Bavaria, Germany

The Maria Himmelfahrt Birkenstein pilgrimage church in Fischbachau, Upper Bavaria, is a true folk sanctuary. Located in the Leitzach Valley in the Mangfall Mountains at the foot of the Breitenstein, it is famous for its late medieval statue of the Virgin Mary, which has been venerated here as a miraculous image since 1673. Every year, numerous pilgrims come here from near and far. During my visit early on the morning of 1 May, I found two touching elderly ladies busy preparing the outdoor altar for the arrival of several walking pilgrimages. Read more
