Skanör and Falsterbo – colourful beach huts, dunes and sandy beach

17. July 2023/0 Comments/in Sweden/by Matthias

Skanör and Falsterbo was our first destination when we finally returned to Sweden after many years. At that time, we had only briefly visited the lido with its colourful beach huts in the dunes on the fine sandy beach on the last day before departing by ferry from nearby Trelleborg. Therefore, we really wanted to see the place again. This time, we travelled via Denmark, as we had chosen Copenhagen as an intermediate stop on our journey. From there, it was only a short drive over the Öresund Bridge to Scania, Sweden’s southernmost province. A few kilometres further south, we finally reached the Falsterbo peninsula and its magnificent sandy beaches. Read more

The Wegelnburg in the Wasgau

20. May 2023/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

Star-shaped beams from a headlamp on the Wegelnburg in front of the panorama of the Palatinate Forest at dawn

A new spring day began with the glimmer of dawn over the mountains of the Palatinate Forest. I was standing on the Wegelnburg castle ruins, the highest castle complex in the Palatinate, looking out over a wide panorama featuring the Dahner Felsenland and the Wasgau. This is the name of the wooded area that stretches across both sides of the border between Germany and France. Read more

Ascent to the Ramolhaus in the Gurgler Valley

10. September 2022/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Dusk over the Ramolhaus with a view of the cloud-covered main Alpine ridge with Hochwilde, Annakogel, Bankkogel, Karlesspitze and the Gurgler Glacier, Gurgler Valley, Ötztal Alps, Tyrol, Austria

At sunset, the clouds cleared. A spectacular day’s tour in the Ötztal Alps concluded with a view from the Ramolhaus of the main Alpine ridge and the Gurgler Glacier, a sight no longer expected that day. This summer, on the tour to the Brunnenkogelhaus, I had already become acquainted with a part of the “quiet side of Sölden,” as the valleys and mountains away from the ski resorts are marketed. Now I returned to hike through another quiet and peaceful region of the Ötztal Alps on a two-day tour, crossing the Ramoljoch from the Gurgler Valley into the Venter Valley. Read more

Late Summer Morning on Veitsberg

4. September 2022/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

View from Frechjoch over Veitsberg of the sunrise over the Kaiser Mountains, Tyrol, Austria

As I set off in the dark of early morning from the car park on the Ackernalm to experience the sunrise on Veitsberg (1,787 m), a car pulled up beside me. A tired young couple in traditional dress wound down the passenger window. A friend had gone missing from the party, and they asked if I had seen a young woman in a dirndl. The music, the laughter, the arriving and departing guests of the celebration at the mountain inn – the Almkirta – had been audible all night. She hadn’t passed my roof tent, and I hadn’t encountered her anywhere else. As I later found out, she had found a safe and cosy hideaway with a handsome young man. Read more

Sunrise at Sletterhage Fyr Lighthouse

12. August 2022/0 Comments/in Denmark/by Matthias

A fisherman drives his motorboat through the calm sea off the coast of Jutland against the colourful dawn sky, Djursland, Denmark

The Sletterhage Fyr Lighthouse stands at the southern tip of the Helgenæs peninsula, south of Djursland in northern Denmark. It secures the shipping routes from Åarhus Bay into the Great Belt of Denmark. From its vantage point, with another panoramic view, I looked out over a calm sea with hardly any swell during this peaceful, quiet dawn. Read more

The Brunnenkogelhaus in the Ötztal Alps

19. July 2022/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Sunset over the Brunnenkogelhaus in the Ötztal Alps, Austria

A unique, beautiful sunset at the Brunnenkogelhaus (2,738 m) with a 360-degree panorama over Sölden, the Ötztal Alps, and the highest peaks of the Stubai Valley. The hut sits like a crown on a mountain peak and can be reached via physically demanding and partly steep, but hardly exposed, mountain trails. Over 1,300 metres of ascent must be overcome. However, for moments like these, I gladly carry the extra weight of my camera equipment. Read more

Costa Verde – Wild Dunes, Long Sandy Beach

4. July 2021/0 Comments/in Sardinia/by Matthias

Juniper tree with crooked, bent branches in the sand of the dunes at Piscinas beach, Costa Verde in the warm evening sun, Sardinia, Italy

The Costa Verde is one of my highlights in Sardinia. First, there’s the magnificent natural landscape with its vast sand dunes. Then, the seemingly endless sandy beach. In the hinterland, hikes on rocky ridges and visits to the slowly decaying buildings and facilities of former mining operations beckon. The southwest presents a completely different face compared to the rocky cliffs at Torre Argentina near Bosa or the cliffs on the west coast near Alghero. These varied landscapes make Sardinia such an attractive travel destination. Read more
