Sunrise at Sletterhage Fyr Lighthouse
The Sletterhage Fyr Lighthouse stands at the southern tip of the Helgenæs peninsula, south of Djursland in northern Denmark. It secures the shipping routes from Åarhus Bay into the Great Belt of Denmark. From its vantage point, with another panoramic view, I looked out over a calm sea with hardly any swell during this peaceful, quiet dawn.
Getting up early is often rewarded. A short distance from the waterline, I was able to observe two porpoises repeatedly surfacing briefly from the water. This enchanting, ethereal atmosphere lingered in the twilight of dawn for a long time, until the rising sun ushered in a warm summer’s day and shipping traffic began. I hope this place can preserve its relaxed atmosphere for a long time.
An association looks after the area around the lighthouse and has set up a small museum about the history of the beacon. They also allow up to five vehicles to stay overnight in the car park. A kiosk provides refreshments, drinks, and small snacks during the day. At one of the picnic tables, we enjoyed an undisturbed morning coffee, full of intense impressions and impressive views, before the kiosk operators began preparations for the day’s business and the first visitors soon started to arrive. Our journey that day continued east to the town of Ebeltoft.
