Rocks and Coves at Cap de Creus

2. June 2024/0 Comments/in Spain/by Matthias

Morning sun over a rocky cove opposite Cadaqués Old Town, Catalonia, Spain

The Cap de Creus peninsula marks the easternmost point of mainland Spain. Like a backbone, the eastern foothills of the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean coast here. West of a line from El Port de la Selva to Roses, the coastal mountains separate Cadaqués and the Cap de Creus Natural Park from the rest of the Costa Brava. Until the construction of the only access road in the 19th century, Cadaqués was only accessible by sea. Numerous long-distance hiking trails, for example, along the main ridge of the Pyrenees to the Atlantic, begin or end here.

Sunrise at Sletterhage Fyr Lighthouse

12. August 2022/0 Comments/in Denmark/by Matthias

A fisherman drives his motorboat through the calm sea off the coast of Jutland against the colourful dawn sky, Djursland, Denmark

The Sletterhage Fyr Lighthouse stands at the southern tip of the Helgenæs peninsula, south of Djursland in northern Denmark. It secures the shipping routes from Åarhus Bay into the Great Belt of Denmark. From its vantage point, with another panoramic view, I looked out over a calm sea with hardly any swell during this peaceful, quiet dawn. Read more

Helgenæs – A visit to the southernmost peninsula of Djursland

12. August 2022/0 Comments/in Denmark/by Matthias

The Sletterhage lighthouse behind pine trees in the purple twilight, Djursland, Jutland, Denmark

On our journey through Denmark, heading south from the northern tip at Skagen via Lønstrup and Rubjerg Knude as well as the Thy region with Klitmøller and Thisted, the south of Djursland with the Helgenäs (Helgenæs) peninsula was our next destination. The first stop was Rosenholm Castle before we continued our drive into the Mols Bjerge National Park. Read more

Trip to the lighthouse on the Rubjerg Knude shifting sand dune

8. August 2022/0 Comments/in Denmark/by Matthias

Clouds passing over the Rubjerg Knude Fyr lighthouse on the Rubjerg Knude shifting sand dune on the coast of North Jutland, Denmark

The west coast of Denmark captivated me with its diverse, wild beaches, dune landscapes, and cliffs. While the surf washes away metres of the coast – up to 300 m in the last hundred years – the prevailing westerly wind blows the sand inland. Becoming and passing away as part of the erosion by wind and water. This also forms large, high sand dunes, which then migrate as shifting sand dunes from the west coast to the east coast of Jutland. This can currently be observed at the Rubjerg Knude shifting sand dune south of Lønstrup or the Råbjerg Mile near Skagen. Read more

The Two Towers of Castiglione della Pescaia

5. August 2020/0 Comments/in Italy, Tuscany/by Matthias

The two towers at the harbour entrance of Castiglione della Pescaia, Maremma, Tuscany, Italy

At the mouth of the river Bruna into the Tyrrhenian Sea stand two towers – a blue and a red lighthouse. The towers show seafarers a safe way into the harbour of Castiglione della Pescaia, a fishing and bathing resort on the southern Tuscan coast. Read more
