Auckland Sky Tower

11. January 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand Landscapes/by Matthias

Auckland Sky Tower, North Island, New Zealand

The modern design of Auckland’s Sky Tower symbolizes New Zealand’s emergence into the new millennium. Situated on a narrow stretch of the North Island, this vibrant city lies between the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea.
Auckland is home to one of the world’s largest urban Polynesian populations. Its rich cultural diversity, shaped by people from many different backgrounds, is especially evident in the city’s lively nightlife, vibrant cultural scene, and relaxed atmosphere.

Sunset at Ketetahi Hut

View from the Ketetahi Hut, Tongariro National Park, North Island, New Zealand

After crossing the rugged volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park along the famous Tongariro Alpine Crossing, Ketetahi Hut, near the Ketetahi hot springs, is a popular place to rest.
Perched on a sunny terrace on the slopes of the North Crater, this remarkable spot offers breathtaking views across Lake Rotoaira towards Lake Taupo. It remains one of my absolute favorite places in New Zealand and throughout the national parks.
I will never forget the sunsets here, or those unforgettable nights when the distant lights of Taupo and the twinkling stars seemed to merge into a magical universe.

Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook

11. January 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand Landscapes/by Matthias

Lake Pukaki and Mount Cook in the New Zealand Southern Alps in autumn

The golden hues of autumn contrast beautifully with the brilliant blue of the lakes and the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps. Coming from Lake Tekapo, the road climbs over a hill, and suddenly a majestic panorama unfolds, revealing Mount Cook and Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park.
I would love to stop immediately and take in this breathtaking moment. But apparently, many travelers before me had the same idea, possibly leading to accidents. No-stopping signs appearing every twenty meters leave me no choice but to continue driving.
Incidentally, autumn tends to bring more stable weather conditions, increasing the chances of enjoying unobstructed views of the mountains beneath clear skies.

Coromandel Peninsula

2. January 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand Landscapes/by Matthias

A warm Pacific climate and gently rolling green hills, once covered with majestic kauri trees – the ancient giants of the forest – shaped the landscape of New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island centuries ago.
Today, challenging hiking trails following former logging tracks, past old log-driving dams and up rocky steps in the Pinnacles Range near Thames, tell the story of the once-prosperous timber industry, when vast areas of native forest were cleared.
For a more relaxing experience, enjoy a warm soak in the natural hot springs at Hot Water Beach or explore the stunning coastal scenery of Cathedral Cove. With convenient ferry connections, the peninsula has become a popular getaway for residents of Auckland.

East Cape and Te Araroa Bay

2. January 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand, New Zealand Landscapes/by Matthias

Where the first light of day touches the land. As I savored the solitude and tranquility of this peaceful place, I thought of the crowds who had gathered here to witness the first sunrise of the new millennium.
This is traditional Māori land, where the deep spirituality, legends, myths, and distinctive way of life of the Māori people can be experienced perhaps more vividly than anywhere else. The region is also home to some of New Zealand’s last remaining pristine native rainforests.

A Traveler’s Paradise

2. January 2009/0 Comments/in New Zealand/by Matthias

New Zealand has always been a land vast enough to inspire dreams, longings, hopes, and romantic clichés. Its remote location on the far edge of the Pacific has long fueled the image of an untouched paradise or a peaceful escape from the modern world. Yet many New Zealanders – from hardworking farmers to sailors battling wind and waves – are quick to challenge the romanticized vision cherished by so many visitors.

Discover the country that awaits you through breathtaking panoramic photographs of New Zealand’s diverse landscapes. Look beyond the familiar stereotypes and gain an insight into the lives and character of its people, or explore the fascinating culture and traditions of the Māori.
