Panorama of Mali Lošinj at sunset
Above Mali Lošinj, the largest town on the island of Lošinj in the Kvarner Bay on the Croatian Adriatic coast, there is a viewpoint on the Kalvarija ridge. It’s the ideal spot to enjoy the sunset with a glass of wine and local delicacies – a fish or meat/cheese platter. While the spot used to be freely accessible, the bar Providenca has now opened there.
For an entrance fee or a minimum spend on a drink, you gain access to the terraced area, which features tables and benches, as well as a short educational trail through a karst landscape and the island’s history. By the way, tables are quickly reserved in advance when the weather is good. The view is simply magnificent; the panorama stretches from the harbour and old town of Mali Lošinj, the Čikat peninsula across the entire island, the Osoršćica mountain range, Cres, Susak, Krk, and on clear days, even to the Croatian mainland.
After the sun disappeared behind the horizon, many visitors applauded, which I found strange. Who are they applauding for their performance, who is responsible for the spectacle? I was also irritated that many visitors immediately left afterwards, thus missing the beautiful blue hour and the subsequent period with the starry sky.
