Senj – Notorious for its Bora Winds

12. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Harbour pier and lighthouse of Senj on the Croatian Adriatic coast, backlit by the glowing twilight over Krk island

For the drive from Munich to Dubrovnik, Senj was a promising spot for an overnight stay on the long journey. Senj is located on the coast of the southern Kvarner Bay, below the Velebit mountains, and after many kilometres on the motorway through Germany, Austria and Slovenia, it can be reached on the final stretch from Rijeka via the scenic and winding coastal road. For continuing the journey, this is one of the few mountain passes to the motorway, which from here, after a wide curve inland, runs parallel to the coast again. Read more

Through the Zadar Archipelago into the Sunset

7. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Yacht on the sea between the islands of Kvarner Bay and the Zadar Archipelago in front of the setting sun, Croatia

The ferry from Mali Lošinj to Zadar was to take us from the large islands of Kvarner Bay through the Zadar Archipelago back to the Croatian mainland. This concluded the first leg of our journey along the Croatian Adriatic coast, via the islands of Krk, Cres and Lošinj. The crossing takes approximately 6 hours. Departure is around 4 pm, so we would start in glorious afternoon light, then experience the sunset, dusk and the night sky at sea. We promised ourselves unforgettable impressions of a beautiful landscape, interesting encounters and wonderful lighting – and we were not disappointed. Read more

The Museum Ship Lošinjski Loger “Nerezinac”

6. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

The restored traditional cargo ship Lošinjski Loger

The restored traditional cargo ship “Nerezinac” is anchored in the port of Mali Lošinj. The ship is a two-masted topsail schooner, a so-called Lošinjski Loger, built at the end of the 19th century, capable of carrying 80-220 tonnes of cargo. As a maritime museum, it commemorates the shipbuilding tradition in the upper Adriatic and has been lovingly restored with great attention to detail, for example, the rope fenders or the blocks and deadeyes in the shrouds. Panorama at Sveti Salvadur Church

5. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

View through the arches of the facade of Sv. Salvadur Chapel on Cres to the sea in sunshine, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

From the town of Cres, on the island of Cres in Croatia, a scenic circular hike leads to Sveti Salvadur Church. The small, whitewashed church sits on a hillside and offers a magnificent panorama over the Bay of Cres, towards Valun and as far as the Istrian coast.

Morning Mood in Cres

5. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Boats in Cres Old Town harbour with cafes and restaurants in the morning sun, Cres, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

During an early walk through the harbour in Cres Old Town, I experience the relaxed morning atmosphere shortly after sunrise. The fishermen sell their fresh catch directly at the quay to restaurant owners and other customers. The cafes, bars, and restaurants along the promenade, still empty, are tidied up, cleaned, and their terraces hosed down, then tables are quickly set for the first early guests. Read more

Jump into the sunset

4. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Boy jumping from a diving board into the Mediterranean Sea on Cres island in Kvarner Bay at sunset, Croatia

Sunset on Cres. As the sun goes down, the glowing rays of the midday heat give way to a velvety warmth. The sea is refreshing and the air pleasantly caresses wet skin without causing a shiver. During the evening sunset, the temperature is in a pleasant balance between the paralysing summer heat and the anticipation of a refreshing nightly cool-down. So the evening invites you for a swim, which many children are still taking advantage of. A small diving tower with a springboard catches my attention. Time and again, a boy tirelessly climbs the steps, jumps and dives into the refreshing water. The first day of our journey along the Croatian coast ends atmospherically.

Along the Croatian Adriatic Coast – Cres

4. August 2019/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Car ferry to Cres leaving the port of Valbiska on Krk, Kvarner Bay, Croatia

The trip along the Croatian coast came about spontaneously after looking at the weather forecast, which predicted a long period of cold and bad weather for the route we originally planned to take north. Besides, we were very impressed by the country and its people during our first visit to Croatia last year – on Mali Lošinj – and really loved it. We wanted to cover a large part of the route by ferry. This allowed us to experience the island worlds from the sea and get as many varied impressions of the Croatian coast as possible.
