Low season in Talamone

3. October 2023/0 Comments/in Tuscany/by Matthias

The Rocca Aldobrandesca castle on the rocky coast of the Maremma in Talamone in the golden sunset, Tuscany, Italy

Talamone, a picturesque coastal village in Tuscany, has its own unique charm. Talamone offers spectacular views of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The coastline is characterised by rocky cliffs, hidden coves and crystal-clear water, making the place a paradise for nature lovers and water sports enthusiasts. Visitors appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and the warm hospitality of the locals. In contrast to the heavily visited – if not overcrowded – tourist destinations in northern Tuscany, as we experienced in Pisa the days before, Talamone is significantly quieter. This is particularly noticeable in the low season in September and October. The sea is still at a pleasant temperature and the sunny days are southern-warm. Read more

The Rocca Aldobrandesca castle on the rocky coast of the Maremma in Talamone in the twilight of dusk, Tuscany, Italy

Talamone, located on the southern coast of Tuscany, has a rich history dating back to Etruscan times. The village was once an important port. The historic buildings in the old town and the ruins of numerous castles and towers bear witness to its past. Particularly impressive is the imposing medieval Rocca Aldobrandesca fortress, which perches high above the village on the headland, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding area. Read more

Loviste – Farewell from Dalmatia

20. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Sunset on the rocky coast near Loviste on the Pelješac peninsula, Croatia

Loviste is located in a small bay, right at the western end of the elongated Peljesac peninsula in Dalmatia on the Croatian Adriatic coast. A long mountain range forms the backbone of the peninsula; on the sunny southern slopes, highly prized red wines from the indigenous grape variety Plavac Mali, such as Dingač and Postup, are grown. Stormy Days on Mljet

17. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

View from the summit of Monte Kuc of the saltwater lakes in Mljet Island National Park against the sunset

After the sunny days in Dubrovnik, a storm front was approaching for our planned stay on Mljet Island. Large areas in the western part of the island are designated as a national park. However, there are no camping facilities there. Therefore, for the bad weather days, we had booked a holiday apartment in the hamlet of Soline, directly in the national park. This gave us both warm and dry accommodation and a central starting point for any explorations the weather might allow. Read more

Abandoned Hotel Belvedere in Dubrovnik

15. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Bathers on a concrete pier below the abandoned Belvedere Hotel with views of Dubrovnik Old Town at sunset

The Hotel Belvedere in Dubrovnik is a legendary five-star luxury hotel, abandoned since the Croatian War in 1991. It’s known as one of the most striking “lost places” on the Adriatic and served as a filming location for Game of Thrones. Read more

A walk along the city walls of Dubrovnik

14. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Minceta Fortress and the city walls of Dubrovnik Old Town in the morning sun

One of the highlights of my stay in Dubrovnik was the walk along the massive city walls. Their origins date back to the Middle Ages and they were expanded to today’s impressive size until the 16th century. Read more

Dubrovnik at Sunset

13. September 2022/0 Comments/in Croatia/by Matthias

Sea kayakers paddling at sunset in the sea in front of Dubrovnik Old Town, Croatia

After a long journey and a stopover in Senj, we finally reached Dubrovnik. In previous years, we hadn’t made it quite so far, only reaching Korcula or Orebic on the Peljesac peninsula. To experience an unforgettable sunset in Dubrovnik, we had many options: with a panoramic view of the city and the sea from Mount Srd, at numerous viewpoints along the coastline such as St. Jacob’s, from one of the towers and battlements of the city walls high above the Old Town, or from a boat in the sea off the coast.
