Abandoned Hotel Belvedere in Dubrovnik
The Hotel Belvedere in Dubrovnik is a legendary five-star luxury hotel, abandoned since the Croatian War in 1991. It’s known as one of the most striking “lost places” on the Adriatic and served as a filming location for Game of Thrones.
The hotel opened in 1985 as one of the most luxurious hotels in former Yugoslavia, boasting over 200 rooms, its own boat dock, and spectacular views of the Old Town. Just six years later, in 1991, it was severely damaged during the Siege of Dubrovnik by Serb-Montenegrin forces and never reopened. Since then, the hotel has been a ruin, marked by graffiti, vandalism, and broken windows. It’s considered dangerous to enter the building and is secured by fences. The hotel’s ruins, particularly the seaside amphitheatre, served as the setting for the epic fight between Prince Oberyn and “The Mountain” in Season 4.
From the car park at St. Jacob’s Monastery, you can walk along the road to some buildings. On the sea side, the lift complex to the quay and the amphitheatre are still visible. The access road then ends at the garage arcades. The location is, of course, stunning, offering several swimming spots and an unobstructed view of Dubrovnik Old Town, especially at sunset. However, there have always been plans for its demolition and the construction of a new hotel.
