Out and about in Tjurpannan Nature Reserve

28. July 2023/0 Comments/in Sweden/by Matthias

Glowing sunset over the rocks in Tjurpannan Nature Reserve in the archipelago of the Swedish west coast

A hike through Tjurpannan Nature Reserve on Sweden’s west coast culminates the beauty of this coastal landscape in a small area. Heathland and freshwater lakes, smooth-polished granite cliffs, islands and the open sea. Read more

The Historic Windmill of Ulseröd

28. July 2023/0 Comments/in Sweden/by Matthias

Windmill with wooden facade in red on a hill near Saltvik in the archipelago of the Swedish west coast, Bohuslän, Tanumshede

In the hamlet of Ulseröd, north of Grebbestad on the Swedish west coast, stands an old windmill. Perched on its hill and with its Falun red facade, it is visible from afar. However, it is not as old as the architectural style of a Dutch windmill might suggest. This windmill only dates back to the early 20th century. Read more

Quiet Night in Smögen

25. July 2023/0 Comments/in Sweden/by Matthias

Sunset over wooden cabins and boathouses in a bay of Smögen in the archipelago on the Swedish west coast

No, the title doesn’t refer to Christmas in Smögen, although a winter stay would certainly appeal to me: snow and ice, twilight, few people and cosy hours in a warm apartment, instead of summer, sunshine, traffic jams on the roads and crowds in the alleys. We were there too, and thus part of the tourist masses. The title refers to our relaxed stay at a quiet pitch. It’s also about how individual, unique and peaceful experiences are possible even in highly frequented travel destinations, with respect and curiosity. Read more

Smögen – Postcard Idyll and Bustling Hub

Smögenbryggan: Boathouses and storehouses with colourful wooden facades between granite rocks on the harbour promenade of Smögen in the archipelago of the Swedish west coast in sunshine

Smögen, located on the island of the same name, is one of the most popular summer destinations on the Swedish west coast – whether by car or campervan, motorboat or sailing boat. The focus is on the Smögenbryggan, a long harbour promenade with cafés and restaurants, boutiques and souvenir shops. Smögen is also known for its colourful boathouses, fishing huts and storehouses, built between the sea and the towering granite rocks. After the quieter days on Malö or Tjörn, the hustle and bustle in Smögen was a stark contrast. Read more

Malö: A World Between

24. July 2023/0 Comments/in Sweden/by Matthias

Glowing clouds at dusk over a wooden jetty on the island of Malö in the archipelago of the Swedish west coast

While driving along the West Swedish archipelago coast, we’ve already visited or crossed many islands, both large and small. The island of Malö, situated between Orust, Skaftö and Flatö—the crossing over a bridge is barely noticeable—is just a transit point for many. The westernmost and fastest connection between the islands runs through here, with only two sounds, just a few hundred metres wide, to be crossed by car ferry. Their crossings then determine the rhythm of the traffic on the only island road; between departures and in the evenings, however, there is silence. That’s exactly why we liked it in this “world between”. Read more

Mollösund and Sea

24. July 2023/0 Comments/in Sweden/by Matthias

Historic red windmill in Mollösund on the island of Orust in the archipelago of the Swedish west coast

In the harbour of the fishing village Mollösund on the island of Orust, numerous motorboats and sailing ships were anchored. Cafés and restaurants were well-filled over lunchtime, long queues formed at the ice cream parlours, sailors sunbathed on their upper decks. Nevertheless, a calm, relaxed atmosphere prevailed. We came here to explore the idyllic village with its many captain’s and fishermen’s houses on a circular walk. Read more

For children, summer lasts forever

23. July 2023/0 Comments/in Sweden/by Matthias

Children and teenagers jumping from the diving board into the sea in the archipelago at Stocken on Sweden's west coast

Memories of childhood summers are often shaped by heat and sunburn, ice cream and cool lemonade (Coke?), swimming pools or the sea, stuffy air in tents and itchy mosquito bites during the almost eternally long summer holidays. What will the children remember from their summer holiday in the archipelago of Sweden’s west coast? Read more
