Setting off for the Schneibstein

14 October 2012/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

It’s a clear, crisp summer morning at the Carl-von-Stahl-Haus on the Torrener Joch in the east of the Berchtesgaden National Park. The first hikers already set off at dawn to experience the sunrise from the summit of the Schneibstein before taking the long path to the Kärlingerhaus on the “Grossn Reibn”. My stage for this second day is shorter, so I sit for another half hour and let the panorama soak in. The first delicate violet hues on the horizon and mountain peaks are soon followed by a glowing red that, alongside the “King” Watzmann, soon captures the surrounding mountains. Read more

Morning Mood at Gotzenalm

13 October 2012/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

First, the new day’s first sunbeams reach the Watzmann, before the mountain peaks of the Steinernes Meer around the Funtenseetauern (2579 m) also glow in the morning sun. Gotzenalm, which offers this panoramic view, is popular with mountain bikers and hikers, especially for the circular hike via the Stahlhaus, Schneibstein and Seeleinsee, which is also suitable for experienced children. Additionally, the route via Wasseralm and Kärlingerhaus on Lake Funtensee can be extended into a larger circuit.

Just a few metres from this photo spot is also the famous “Feuerpalfen” viewpoint, offering views of the Watzmann and St. Bartholomä on Lake Königssee.

Sunrise at the Watzmann

22 September 2012/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

I’m standing in the fresh morning air and complete silence at the Feuerpalfen viewpoint near the Gotzenalm, over 1,000 metres above St. Bartholomä and the Königssee, looking up at the summit of the Watzmann, which is glowing in the first light of the sun. Read more

On the Jenner at Lake Königssee

22 September 2012/0 Comments/in Germany/by Matthias

The Jenner is the ultimate vantage point for views of Lake Königssee and the Watzmann in the Berchtesgadener Land. Since it’s accessible by cable car, it’s quite busy. At the viewpoint, I immediately notice several visitors taking “souvenir photos” of their soft toys with the panorama of Lake Königssee, the Watzmann and the Steinernes Meer in the background, which are then sent as emails to the children back home. This seems to be a current trend and a modern version of “Felix the Hare”, who wrote letters home about his travel adventures. Read more

View from the Scaliger Castle in Malcesine

16 September 2012/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Among the many spots where I most enjoyed the magnificent landscape of Lake Garda and the towering mountains is the tower of the Scaliger Castle in Malcesine on the eastern shore of Lake Garda. Although the town has to endure many tourists in the height of summer, the viewing platform seems to be a comparatively quiet place due to the paid admission and the many stairs. To the north, you can see Monte Brione, which separates Riva from Torbole; to the south, the view reaches the other fortresses in Torri del Benaco and the peninsula of Sirmione.

You can find more images of Lake Garda and Italy in the Italy gallery.

Sunrise on Pleisenspitze

1 January 2012/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

Even though I had already stood on the summit of Pleisenspitze (2,567 m) the day before, I didn’t want to miss the chance to do the tour again, as originally planned, for sunrise. Siggi, the hut warden, had predicted a sunny day for today, the first Sunday in November, despite yesterday’s persistent Föhn storm. He was right, as was his forecast that it would remain warm, dry, and predominantly sunny for the next three weeks, with winter arriving late. So, I crept out of the dormitory, where everyone was still fast asleep after the atmospheric hut evening. Read more

Hut Fun at Pleisenhütte

1 January 2012/0 Comments/in Austria/by Matthias

After the summit experience on the Pleisenspitze, I enjoyed a delicious and fortifying dinner – venison goulash with dumplings. The evening atmosphere at Pleisenhütte is characterised by the fact that electric light is only available in the kitchen, and paraffin lamps or lovingly arranged candles illuminate all the other rooms – creating an absolutely cosy and homely ambience. Furthermore, hut warden Siggi and his family cater to guests’ wishes with great hospitality. It doesn’t take long before the guitar or accordion is brought out and a multi-voiced song rings through the air. Read more
