Early Season in Lazise

21. March 2026/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

The sun sets golden directly behind the entrance to the Old Harbour of Lazise on Lake Garda; Veneto, Italy

On the south-eastern shore of Lake Garda lies Lazise, one of the region’s most charming towns – a historical gem that impressively combines history, culture, and a Mediterranean way of life. A stay in Lazise in late winter, with the first signs of spring, was a completely different experience from a classic summer holiday – quieter, clearer, and more intense. Read more

Gardesana Occidentale – A journey into the past

29. October 2023/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Cyclists and cars with motion blur in a tunnel of the Gardesana Occidentale above Limone, Lombardy, Italy

The most famous section of the “Gardesana Occidentale”, as the State Road 45 between Brescia (Lombardy) and Trento (Trentino) is known, is the part between Gargnano and Riva del Garda on Lake Garda. Built in the 1930s, it was the first time many towns on the western shore of the lake were directly connected by road. It is a remarkable achievement how engineers and construction workers created a road along the steep rock faces: narrow, winding and with many tunnels and galleries blasted into the rock. Today, many admire and describe it as a “dream road”. Read more

Quiet Hours on Lake Garda

28. October 2023/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

View over the night-lit town of Limone on Lake Garda in the blue hour of dawn, Lombardy, Italy

The holidaymakers were asleep, no ferries on the lake. Even the morning refuse collection hadn’t started yet. A few cars drove by, otherwise, silence still reigned this morning in Limone on Lake Garda. After an enjoyable evening in the old town of Limone sul Garda, I’m back at a beautiful viewpoint at dawn, high up on the Gardesana road. Read more

Autumn Evening in Limone sul Garda

27. October 2023/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Oleander blossoms in Limone with a view of northern Lake Garda at sunset, Lombardy, Italy

On the way back from Umbria, we only had a far too short overnight stay in Limone sul Garda. We knew we wanted to come back again soon. At the end of October, the opportunity arose at short notice to extend the summer. To anticipate, I was not disappointed. I even managed to swim in the lake. Read more

Autobianchi Bianchina – Italian Style

1. July 2020/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

A red Autobianchi Bianchina Trasformabile classic car and grey Nissan Figaro cabriolet on the deck of a ferry on Lake Garda, Italy

Just before the ferry from Torri del Benaco across Lake Garda to Maderno departed, two pretty older convertibles rolled onto the deck. Later research revealed that these were a grey Nissan Figaro, a 1990s car with a retro look, and a red and white Autobianchi Bianchina Trasformabile, which was built from 1957 to 1969. Both vehicles were stylish eye-catchers, especially the Bianchina, which still looks to be in original condition. Based on the chassis of the legendary Fiat 500, designer Fabio Luigi Rapi conjured up an elegant, flowing, and sporty body. Read more

San Vigilio – Elegance on the Shores of Lake Garda

30. June 2020/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Panorama of Locanda San Vigilio on Lake Garda in the morning sun, Veneto, Italy

Between Torri del Benaco and Bardolino, precisely where the eastern shore of Lake Garda takes a sharp turn eastwards, lies the small headland of Punta San Vigilio. The ensemble of hotel, restaurant and café, the villa with its Renaissance park, and the adjacent bathing beach form a tranquil and elegant retreat. The humanist Agostino di Brenzone laid the foundation stone as early as 1540, creating an architectural masterpiece based on the existing church, harbour, and gardens. Read more

Tranquil Morning on Lake Garda

30. June 2020/0 Comments/in Italy/by Matthias

Wisps of cloud and patches of mist in the morning sun over northern Lake Garda, Veneto, Trentino, Italy

The last wisps of cloud and patches of mist from the night’s thunderstorms drift weightlessly in the first sunlight over the calm water surface and the massive backdrop of the steeply rising mountains on Lake Garda. The summit of Monte Baldo already reaches into the sunrise, while the western flanks and the northern end of the lake still rest in the dark shadow of the mountain. From this early and delicate twilight, a dazzling, hot summer’s day slowly develops. The popular holiday region awakens. The first isolated dog barks from the surrounding villages. Then comes the commuter traffic. Waste collection, farmers, and tradespeople provide the further soundscape. Everyday life. Read more
